Chief Kanim downs Maywood
The Chief Kanim eighth-grade boys basketball team hosted a
scrappy Maywood team last week, taking the win, 66-52.
The Hawks came out firing, with Jeremy Johnston and Kris Bostic
accounting for 15 of Chief Kanim’s 17 first-quarter points. The Hawks
lost some ground in the second quarter and found themselves down at
halftime, 26-25. In the second half, the birds finally got going and took a 45-42
third- quarter lead. The fourth quarter was all Chief Kanim’s as they
outscored Maywood 21-10 to ice the win.
Johnston again led the Hawks with 31 points and 22 rebounds.
Hank Kennedy had 18 points and pounded the boards for 17 rebounds, dished
out seven assists, three steals and three blocked shots. Mike Lindor also
added eight points and nine rebounds. Other players scoring were Bostic, six;
and Brad Trombley, three. Matty Secord had an outstanding game,
playing tough defense, getting three rebounds and two assists. Other players
seeing action were Jay Lewis, Jimmy Fleming, Nick Sheldon and
Corey Roe.
“We need to play hard for four quarters, run our offense more
effectively and make better passes,” coach Fowler stated after the game.
The Hawks are now a league leading 6-0 before playing host to Tolt
on March 16.
Eagles win over Mann
The varsity Eagles’ soccer team took on the team from Mann
Middle School last week and brought home another win, 8-0.
Plagued with the soggiest, mud-soaked field conditions of the
season, the Lady Eagles began the game at a pace much slower than
demonstrated in previous events. SMS dominated possession of the ball but were
unable to register their first goal until 17 minutes into the game on a solid
Kresten Berndt pass to Robin Trombley.
The second half of the game witnessed Kayla Jayne set up Berndt
to score another Eagle goal, and once the momentum shifted, it was all
the Eagles. The offensive pressure persisted and Jeanie Franz, Ariel
Waddell and Whitney Chelgren assisted other scores by Berndt and
Trombley. Again, the remarkable defensive work of Jessica Wada, Liana Felt,
Catlin Braun and Vanessa Scalzo kept the Mustang offense from penetrating
past midfield.
Hawks encounter foul trouble
The Chief Kanim eighth-grade Junior Varsity White Hawks lived
up to their reputation yesterday and played another thrilling game
against Tolt. But as several members of the team fouled out, Tolt came back
and won, 59-56,
The Hawks started slowly, scoring only two in the first quarter to
Tolt’s 12 points. They warmed up a little in the second quarter and trailed
26-19 at the half.
But in the third, the Hawks came out on fire, scoring 20 points to tie
the game at 39 each. Looking to put the game away, the fourth quarter
was Chief Kanim’s initially but as Matt Marshall, Zach Kramer and
Eric McCammon fouled out, Tolt had the chance to take the game.
Scoring was Marshall with five, Kramar with nine, Chase
Robinson with two, McCammon with 13, Andrew Conway with 20 and
Sean Macrae with seven. Other key performances were put in by Tom
Schultz, Patrick Davis and Sean Rogers.
Macrae and Marshall led the team in assists; Kramar and Davis led
in steals with six each. McCammon dominated the boards inside with
18 rebounds and Rogers had two jump balls.
“We played very well today,” said coach Dick Kirby. “We ran our
press well for the first time and it got us in the ball game,” he added. “Tolt had
a little help today, but we rose to the occasion and made the game close.”
Offensive players of the game were Marshall and Conway.
Defensive players of the game were McCammon, Kramar and Davis. Best off the
bench was Macrae.
Hawks thump Tolt
The CKMS boys eighth-grade team hosted Tolt last week. The
Hawks took a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Tolt came back in the
second quarter giving CKMS a slim 34-23 halftime lead.
The Hawks meant business in the third quarter and blitzed a dazed
Tolt for 26 points. Starting the fourth quarter, the home team led 62-27.
The game ended with the Hawks winning, 72-38.
A super hot Kris Bostic, led all scorers with 27 points. Bostic was
11-12 from the floor and 5-5 from the charity stripe. “Big Fella”
Jeremy Johnston, added 18 points, 16 rebounds and 6 blocked shots.
Every player scored in this one. Hank Kennedy had six points;
Jimmy Fleming, Corey Roe, Matty Secord and Brad Trombley had four each;
Jay Lewis, three; and Nick Sheldon, two. Trombley added five assists and
four steals and Roe played awesome defense on Tolt’s best player and
shut him down in the second half. The eighth-grade Hawks are 7-0 and
will play at Pine Lake Thursday, March 23.
SMS dominated Eagles
The eighth-grade Eagles dominated the Tolt Thunderbirds last
week with a 68-38 victory. The team effort by the Eagles saw four players
scoring in double digits. Eric Meuli, Jarrod Weigardt and Luke Landdeck put
the clamps on Tolt’s guards after they scored the first two points in the game.
That strong defensive pressure led to a 25-4 first quarter lead for
the Eagles. The second quarter was highlighted when Josh Harris hit
Josiah Cormier on an alley-oop pass for a spectacular score. Jordan
Proudfoot and Michael Gravronski man-handled Tolt’s inside players in the second
half, scoring 13 and 15 points respectively.
Nick Swanson stood in for a charge in the third quarter and
earned two free-throws which he easily made. Evan Hillburn connected with
Alex Smart on a fast break to put the Eagles up 56-16 at the end of the third
quarter.
SMS victorious over Yelm
On March 8 the Snoqualmie Middle School girls JV soccer
team traveled the long road to Yelm in Thurston County. The Eagles
bounded onto the field, full of energy and vigor, putting the other team off-guard
from the start. Forwards and midfielders kept the ball near the
Whirlwinds’ goal, scoring six points to their zero by the end of the game.
Heather Riexinger, Bethany Jackson and Tennyson Salopek
scored against the opposing team, with the fancy footwork and quick
maneuvering of Tana Heath, Kelsey Euerle, Ariel Swatez and Rebecca
Coffey. Veronica Gee and Danielle Raver fought hard against the
Whirlwinds, making sure that the ball almost never made it onto the Eagles’ half of
the field.
Key defense kicks were made by Brittany Foster, Alex Willing,
Carol Oates and Chantelle Tapia as well as Caitlan and Megan McKague,
Ellie Larson and Melisse Hennig. Goalie Stephanie Strakele had very
little trouble keeping the ball out of the goal, as the Eagles kept the ball down
in enemy territory for 85 percent of the game.
By the end, the Whirlwinds were left winded and worn out, and
the Eagles captured their third win of the season, 6-0. Give `em the
claw, Eagles!
