agle boys lose duel with hawks
The Snoqualmie Middle School boys track team took on Chief Kanim recently but lost in head-to-head competition. With all three grades present, there were many outstanding performances. The eighth-grade boys 400-meter relay team, consisting of Kyle Cantalini, Tony Peterson, Cody Grahm and Russ Bolinger, won with a time of 54.8 seconds. K.C. Bailey won the open 400 meter in 63.6 seconds, and the 800-meter relay team made up of the 400-meter team with Landon Wilson subbing for Cantalini, won in a time of 1:52.9.
In the field events, Ryan Ransavage won the discus with a throw of 102 feet, eight inches and was second in the shot put. Wilson and Bailey also went one-two in the long jump.
There were many improvements and outstanding performances among the seventh-grade squad as well. Jake Beck started things off with an impressive win in the 75-meter high-hurdles with a time of 14.11 seconds. Colin VanSlyke was edged out at the tape and took second in the 100 meter in 13.5 seconds. For the second week in a row, Calvin Mahan dusted the field in the 400 meter and won with a time 68.5 seconds. He was also second in his debut of the 200 meter with a time of 30.5 seconds. Cameron Hillsmann, shot put, and Kevin Stone, long jump, were the lone placers in the field events, taking second and third in their events, respectively.
For the sixth-grade boys, this was their season opener and even with a thin squad there were several performances that stood out. Winning all four events that he competed in, Jake Pierce showed why he’s a young talent that other boys need to look out for. Pierce led the field in the 75-meter hurdles in a time of 14.7 seconds and backed that up with wins in the 200-meter dash (31.4 sec) and the shot put (29 feet, 11 inches). He also anchored the 400-meter relay team to a victory in 65.0 seconds. Dallas Smith also contributed several points to the Eagle’s total buy placing second in the 100-and 200-meter dashes and first in the long jump and high jump, out leaping the fields with 11 feet, five inches and 4 feet, six inches, respectively.
“It was another great all-around performance by all,” said assistant coach Brad Hillard. The kids are really coming along.”
Girls win against Tolt
The sixth-and seventh-grade girls track teams from Snoqualmie Middle School defeated Tolt recently at Chief Kanim Middle School. Summer Nash took three first-place finishes in the hurdles, high jump and long jump events. She also finished second in the 200 meter.
Teammates Alex Rudd, Geena Bumgardner, Emily Beekman and Abbie Grimstad also finished first in the 1,600 meter, 800 meter, discus and shot put, respectively. Second- place finishes for the Eagles were snagged by Megan Past in the 1,600 meter, Lauren Snead in the hurdles, Allie Van Bryce in the 100-meter dash, Kasey Harbuchuk in the 400 meter and Rudd in the 800 meter.
Taking home third-place finishes were Alex Crandell in the 1,600 meter, Shelagh Macaulay in the hurdles, 200 meter and high jump; Anne Wheeler in the 400 meter, Marika Loudenback in the shot put and long jump and Grimstad in the discus. All three Eagle relay teams also captured first-place finishes. Members of the winning medley-relay team were Snead, Van Bryce, Kyla Lindberg and Wheeler; the 400-relay team members were Snead, Loudenback, Macaulay and Lindberg; and the 800-relay team members were Lindberg, Bumgardner, Snead and Van Bryce.
For the sixth-grade meet, the Eagles literally ran away with 12 first-place finishes out of 13 events. The sixth-grade team was led by Rachel Finnegan capturing four first-place finishes in the 100-meter dash, 200 meter, high jump and anchoring the winning 800-meter relay of Jessica Hargett, Breanne Beckes, and Hailey Conway.
Dannah Parsons had first- place finishes in both the 800 and 1,600-meter events. Rounding out the field of first- place finishes were Izzy Rader in the hurdles, Conway in the 400 meter, Tori Howell in the discus, Andrea Volken in the shot put and Alexis Pearlstein in the long jump. Second-place finishers were Daylee Hames in the 1,600 meter, Pearlstein in the hurdles, Hargett in the 100-meter dash and 200 meter, Wendy Carter in the 400 meter, Volken in the 800 meter and discus, Howell in the shot put, and Aubrey Larion in the high jump.
Placing third were Julia Larson in the 400 meter, Ashley Cowan in the 800 meter, Hailey Eddings in the high jump, and Daylee Hames in the discus. The medley-relay team of Jacklyn Wallace, Alexis Pearlstein, Wendy Carter and Nicoll Hunt improved their No. 1 top 10 time to 2:16.0.
The magnificent seven on the eighth-grade team fell short by a few points to Tolt counterparts. With only seven girls, they made a very strong showing in their final dual-meet of the season. Danielle Crabtree ran to back to back first-place finishes in the 400- and 800-meter runs. Teammate Leah Wiley had a No. 3 top-ten throw in the discus of 91 feet, 6 inches as well as taking second in the 100 meter and third in the shot put. Shelby Westerlund took first in the hurdles and third in the high jump. Kristina Johnson was a double winner, placing second in the 200 meter and third in the discus while teammate Brittney Conway ran to a second-place finish in the 800 meter. The SMS medley-relay team of Johnson, Christina Carlson, Crabtree and Conway placed first as did the 800 meter team of Johnson, Crabtree, Wiley and Westerlund. The seventh- and eighth-grade track teams will compete at the Foothill’s League meet Tuesday, June 7 at Issaquah High School.
Eagles girls triumphant
The Snoqualmie Middle School (SMS) sixth- and seventh-grade girl’s track teams were triumphant over Islander Middle School at Mercer Island recently. The eighth-grade girls fell a little short due to the sheer numbers of their opponents.
Summer Nash led the seventh-grade girls team taking three first-place finishes in her events. She broke two school records in the high jump at 5 feet even and hurdles running a 12.8 second time. She also placed first in the long jump and second in the 200 meter.
The seventh-grade girls swept the hurdles, discus and 800-meter events. Next to Nash in the hurdles was Shelagh Macaulay and Lauren Snead. The discus was led by Emily Beekman, followed by Marika Loudenback and Abby Grimstad. In the 800-meter run, it was Geena Bumgardner, Alex Rudd and Michelle Whims all finishing under three minutes and within four seconds of each other. Picking up additional second-place finishes for the Eagles were Megan Past in the 1,600 meter, and 400 meter, Allie Van Bryce in the 100-meter dash, Loudenback in the shot, and Macaulay in the high jump.
Third-place finishes came from Rudd in the 1,600 meter, Anne Wheeler in the 400 meter, Beekman in the shot and Loudenback in the shot. The 400-meter relay team of Kasea Harbachuk, Melissa Essig, Micaela Boehmer and Nikki Buzzell took first place as did the 800-meter relay team of Kyla Lindberg, Macaulay, Snead and Van Bryce.
Rachel Finnegan led the sixth-grade girls team winning four events. She ran to three school records in the 100-meter dash, 200 meter and anchored the 800-meter relay running with teammates Jesse Hargett, Breanne Beckes and Hailey Conway. She also placed first in the high jump. Dannah Parsons also had a good day placing first in both the 800 meter and 1,600 meter, as well as running to a school record time in the 800 meter of 2:53.6.
Other first-place finishers for the Eagles were Alexis Pearlstein in the long jump, Tori Howell in the discus and Izzy Rader in hurdles setting a new school record of 13.4 seconds. Hailey Conway took second in the 400 meter and also broke the school record in a new time of 1:11.9 for the sixth grade. Other second-place finishers were Pearlstein in the hurdles, Nicole Hunt in the 200 meter, Andrea Volken in the shot, Beckes in the long jump and Aubrey Larion in the high jump.
