Alyssa McClaucklin had seven points and 11 rebounds while teammates Shauna Reed, MacKenzie Curley and Jesserah Helm each contributed two rebounds. Tolt girls’ basketball team steps up
The Tolt Middle School eighth-grade girls’ basketball team started the season with a nice victory over Beaver Lake at home. The team jumped out to a 16-4 lead and never looked back. Rachael Kevin led Tolt with 16 points. Brooke Chapman added six points and Jackie Taylor scored six. The Thunderbirds won the game with a final score of 37-31.
Next the team traveled to Maywood and lost a hard-fought battle against the much improved opponent. The final score was 53-49. Despite losing starting-point guard Kevin midway through the third quarter, Tolt battled to the end. Maywood sank a three pointer late to pull out the victory. Kevin scored 11, Chapman had 15, Shannon Bailey scored seven and Michaela Richter had four points.
Tolt then hosted Chief Kanim and had a struggle against the tough Hawks. Chief Kanim held a small lead throughout the contest. Some full-court press strategy by the T-birds in the second half seemed to energize the team’s comeback bid. Two last minute free throws by Sara Houser gave Tolt their first lead of the game. Then Jackie Taylor stole the ball as Chief Kanim was setting up their final shot to take the win. Taylor raced full court, was fouled, sank two free throws and the win was sealed
Bailey had 11 rebounds and six points. Chapman scored 11 and along with Kevin as guard, created the pressure defense that gave the team the chance to pull out the victory. Houser scored seven of her nine points in the final quarter as Tolt outscored the Hawks 13-7. Richter had five points including a three pointer.
Despite some major injuries, this team is stepping up their efforts and looking forward to a great season.
