SMS boys sweep Tolt in track


The Snoqulamie Middle School boys’ track team went to Tolt recently and came home with three victories.

The eighth-grade boys scored 69 points and took home 12 first-place finishes, five second-place finishes and one third-place finish.

Cody Hyatt was first in the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, while teammate Matt Haas took first in the 1,600 meters and 800 meters.

Brian Mauhl was first in the shot put and discus, and third in the 200 meters. Levi Nelson was first in the long jump and the 400 meters. Chris Brenan was first in the hurdles and second in the 1,600 meters.

Jason Townzen was first in the high jump. Jordan Lamborn placed second in the 400 and 200 meters, and Tanner Powers took second in the long jump and the 100 meters.

The seventh-grade boys scored 71 points and took home 11 first-place finishes, seven second-place finishes and five third-place finishes.

Keith Keller was first in the hurdles and second in the high jump. Aaron Nichter was first in the 1,600 meters and the long jump and second in the 800 meters. Justice Manson took first in the 100-meter dash and the 200 meters.

Daniel Floyd placed first in the 800 meters as well as second in the 400 meters. Adam Davies took first in the high jump and second in the shot put. Kyle Wiley-Fulton was first in the 400 meters, second in the long jump and third in the 100-meter dash.

Brian Johnson was second in the 200 meters and third in the high jump. Adam Dalman was third in the 800 meters, while teammate Marcus Holstine placed third in the 1,600 meters.

Marshall Lloyd was third in the shot put and Danny Jepsen was third in the hurdles and second in the discus.

The seventh-grade team also took first in the 400-meter relay, the 800-meter relay and the medley relay.


Eagles team places second


The Snoqualmie Middle School girls’ eighth-grade track team had its best performance in 11 years at the recent Foothills League track-and-field championships held in Issaquah.

The team walked away with a second-place total of 83 points behind Pine Lake’s 108 points.

Beaver Lake took third with 74, Maywood placed fourth, Issaquah was fifth, Chief Kanim Middle School was sixth followed by Tolt Middle School and Mercer Island.

Every Eagle who entered the meet scored points and all 13 events featured an SMS athlete in one of the top three spots.

Leading the way was the outstanding sprinting team of Nicole Remish, Collette Hatch, Kali Walker and Jordan Tipton, who won the 800-meter relay with a time of 2 minutes, 0.1 seconds. The time places them second on the all-time top 10 list for SMS.

Tipton captured two second-place finishes in the the 200-meter dash and long jump while placing third in the 100-meter dash. Chelsie Eddings placed second in the hurdles, as did Alina Plavsky in the discus.

Hatch sprinted to a third-place finish in the 400 meters. Tove Garhart and Erin Dunklee doubled in the 1,600 meters and 800 meters, placing in both. Garhart placed fourth in the 1,600 and sixth in 800, while Dunklee nabbed fifth-place finishes in both events.

Tara Eddings had a personal-record day with her top 10 performance in the high jump. She jumped 4 feet, 8 inches and placed fourth.

Allyson Rosman also picked up a fourth-place finish and set a new personal record in the discus. Both the 400-meter and medley relay teams captured third-place finishes. The medley team of Walker, Krista Tollefson, Remish and Hatch ran to a newly established top 10 record of 2:04.5.

The 400-meter relay team of Walker, Tara Eddings, Garhart and Remish finished in a time of 57.5 seconds. It was a fantastic ending to a great season for the girls, many of whom have been on the SMS track team for the last three years.

The seventh-grade girls tied for a fifth-place finish overall with Chief Kanim.

Taking second in the shot put was Tephra Brune, followed by teammate Julie Patterson who came in third. Carrie Patterson took third in the discus, and teammate Jenna Barnes took fourth.

Anika Granillo was fourth in high jump and Danielle Carlson was sixth. Kayla Grant earned fifth place in the long jump.

In running events, Brune finished fourth in the 400 meters. Granillo was sixth in the hurdles and Kassy Kramer was sixth in the 200 meters.

The medley relay team of Grant, Brune, Granillo and Carlson placed sixth, as did the 800-meter relay team of Grant, Brune, J.Patterson and Carlson.

Katie Stapleton ran in both the 1,600 meters and 800 meters, setting a new personal record in the 1,600.


SMS competes at league meet


The Snoqualmie Middle School boys’ seventh- and eighth-grade track teams competed in the Foothills League meet held at Issaquah High School last week.

The eighth-grade team was fifth overall, with team awards going to Cody Hyatt, for most valuable; Jordan Lamborn for most improved; Brian Mauhl for most inspirational; and Jason Townzen for the coaches award.

For the eighth-grade team, Hyatt was second in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash. Matt Haas came in fourth in the 1,600 meters and seventh in the 800 meters. Townzen was third in the high jump, while teammate Mauhl was fifth in the discus.

Levi Nelson placed sixth in the long jump. Lamborn was fifth in the 400 meters and Chris Brenan was fifth in the hurdles.

The medley relay team of Tanner Powers, Lamborn, Townzen and Nelson placed third, while the team of Powers, Townzen, Nelson and Hyatt captured third in the 800-meter relay.

The team of Powers, Mauhl, Townzen and Nelson was sixth in the 400-meter relay.

The seventh-grade boys also took fifth place overall and came home with a variety of ribbons.

The 800-meter relay team of Davies, Manson, Brian Johnson and Marshall Lloyd was second, while the medley relay team of Lloyd, Adam Dalman, Johnson and Floyd was fourth. The 400-meter relay team of Nichter, Keller, Lloyd and Davies took sixth.

Team awards went to Manson for most valuable; Lloyd for most improved; Floyd for most inspirational; and Manson and Floyd both received the coaches award.


SMS girls win team awards


The seventh and eighth-grade girls’ Snoqualmie Middle School track teams recently announced their awards.

For the seventh-grade, Danielle Carlson won most inspirational; Kassy Kramer was awarded most improved; and the coaches award went to Kayla Grant.

For the eighth-grade, Kali Walker won most inspirational; Chelsie Eddings won most improved; Jordan Tipton won most valuable and the coaches award went to the duo of Alina Plavsky and Nicole Remish.


Hawks set

several records


The Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks had an outstanding track season with the largest number of participants in many years.

At the league tournament, the Hawks had a tough time, with the eighth-grade boys’ and girls’ teams placing sixth, the seventh-grade girls’ team earning fifth and the seventh-grade boys’ team taking second.

Highlights of the season came from Joe Taklo who broke two records, both dating back more than eight years. Taklo set a new school record for the seventh-grade boys in both the 1,600- and 800-meter races.

Nick Johnston also set a new school record for the seventh-grade boys in the shot put with a distance of 38 feet,1/2 inch.

For the eighth-grade boys, the 800-meter relay team of Nick Dietsch, David Carlson, Brian Hills and David Martin set a new record of 1 minute, 51.01 seconds.

For the seventh-grade girls team, the medley relay team of Faith Hutcherson, Corrin Kruse, Hillary Burke and Jessica Petitjean set a new school record with a time of 2:18.43.
