Hawks defeat Keithley
The Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks JV football team traveled to Tacoma last week where they defeated Keithley 40-14. The Hawks used a tough defense and an explosive surge from their offensive line to handle Keithley. Justin Bridges started the Hawks scoring effort with a five-yard touchdown run and extra point. Ian Ilgenfritz then connected with Matt Bangston for a 12-yard touchdown pass and Bridges added the extra point.
Ilgenfritz then rolled his own number for a two-yard touchdown run. Bangston then returned a 50-yard punt for a touchdown and the Hawks led 26-0 at halftime. Joe Farmer started off the second half with a five-yard touchdown run. Jarret Adams added the extra point. Bangston finished off the game with a 10-yard touchdown run (his third of the game) and an Ilgenfritz extra point to make the final score 40-14.
Ilgenfritz finished with 70 yards passing, notching two touchdowns and adding two extra points. Farmer had 82 yards rushing and one touchdown. Bridges had 99 yards rushing, two touchdowns and two extra points. Bankston had 104 total yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Herman had one reception for 35 yards. Adams had one extra point and Jimmy Owens had six tackles.
Hawks volleyball shows strength
The Chief Kanim Middle School volleyball coaches were pleased with the turnout this year. Sixty five girls make up the school’s two varsity and two JV teams. The eighth-grade varsity is composed of: Danielle Covello, Mackenzie Curley, Jenny Marshall, Alyssa McLaughlin, Abby Peterson, Shauna Reid, Erica Stubbs, Kaitlyn Usselman, Kayla Wargi, Grace Washam, Mackenzie Will and Adelei Wolf.
The seventh-grade varsity is composed of Shayne Beach, Paige Dahlberg, Kylie Fetsch, Amanda Gates, Zoe Gogan, Anna Moetului, Sarah Robbins, Baylee Sinner, Katricia Stewart, Alyssa Tampourlos and Laura Woodward.
All the girls have been given basic skills in order to compete in their league. They practice diligently every afternoon if there are no games.
Hawks drop game to Woodbrook
Last week the Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks varsity football team traveled to Woodbrook Middle School in Tacoma where they dropped a game 24-13. The Hawks started off slow and found themselves down 12-0. Then the offense went to work as Vince Vasquez slipped around the end for a beautiful 50-yard run for a touchdown. The extra point failed but on the next offensive possession, Tyler Ostby found Tanner Riley for another Chief Kanim touchdown. Ostby then hit Lucas Zupan for the extra point to give the Hawks a 13-12 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Hawks were plagued by a fumble and interception return for touchdowns by Woodbrook. Outstanding play was seen by Josh and Eric Murphy, Rossco Castagno, Colin Okerfor, Vince Vasquez, Drew Handy, Josh Meyer, Lucas Zupan, Brad Reaves and Mike Hall. The Hawks will play at Mount Si against Tolt on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 5 p.m.
