Carnation’s business climate grows cold

Another wave of Carnation businesses have shut their doors.

Though several new shops moved into town, it’s not enough to fill the empty

storefronts along Tolt Avenue.

Last year Carnation Chamber of Commerce President Steve

Collins watched businesses close, including Pete’s Club, Charmaine’s Town

& Country Florist and White Oak. Total Health and Fitness, Rosebuds

and Miller’s Dry Goods also recently closed, and Nestle USA

announced that it would reduce its workforce and herds by June.

One reason the businesses might be suffering is that Carnation has

become a bedroom community, with residents shopping in the areas

where they work.

Debate brews over sewers

The sewer debate was back on Carnation’s agenda in February,

and residents voiced nearly the same concerns as they did when the

discussions first began years ago.

Some people believe a new sewer system will kick-start the city’s

sagging economy, while others say it would ruin the “flavor” of the

small Valley town.

City representatives listened to those and other concerns at a

forum held in the Senior Center. Mayor Bob Patterson told residents that it had

become “convincingly clear” that it was time to bring sewers into the city.

Mount Si wrestlers tops in KingCo, district

Mount Si capped its wrestling season by winning the KingCo

tournament for all KingCo 3A schools, then followed up with the Sea-King

district title.

It was the second time in the school’s history that the

wrestling team has won a district tournament. The first time was in 1980 at Cheney.
