Explosives found under apartments

SNOQUALMIE – Units from the Snoqualmie Department of Public Safety- Fire Division and Eastside Fire and Rescue responded to a report of explosive materials found at the 37900 block of North Bend Way in Snoqualmie, within Fire District 38, on Friday, Jan. 31.

At approximately 2:36 p.m. an inspector who was working in the crawl space of a five-unit apartment building found the explosive materials and quickly called 911.

Firefighters with the Snoqualmie fire department arrived on the scene and determined that the residents of the apartments needed to be evacuated until further evaluation of the materials could be made. Firefighters and police also closed down a stretch of North Bend Way in both directions for about an hour as a precaution.

The King County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad was called to the scene and reported that the material, ammonium nitrate premixed with diesel fuel, was stable. Detonation devices were not found at the scene. The bomb squad removed the 250-300 pounds of material and residents were able to return to their apartments. It is unknown why the materials were underneath the apartment building but reports from the bomb squad indicated the materials had been there for quite some time.
