Deines leaves her mark

Kate Deines has, in four years of soccer for the Issaquah High School girls’ program, been a big pain for the Mount Si Wildcats.

Deines in 2005 scored a goal and had two assists against Mount Si; last year, she scored goals in both games against the Wildcats, including an overtime winner. This year, the senior, likely bound for the University of Washington next fall, was looking to rescue her team from a bit of an offensive slump as Issaquah played Mount Si.

Deines did it in a big way last Thursday as the Eagles took care of the Wildcats 4-1 in a Kingco 3A match at Mount Si High School. The Issaquah star scored a “hat trick,” or three goals, including one on a penalty kick as the Eagles maintained their hold on first place in what has turned into a very tight conference race.

Issaquah coach Tom Bunnell credited the victory to great play in front of the Mount Si net. “We’ve been working on playing better from 25 yards and in, and I think tonight we played beautiful from 25 yards and in the second half, and that’s a big step for us because that was something that was lacking in other games,” Bunnell said.
