City’s police contract debate goes public

Published 12:36 pm Thursday, October 2, 2008

NORTH BEND – Residents will have their first chance to comment on whether or not the city should opt out of its current contract with King County for police services on Aug. 19.

The meeting will be the first time the City Council has publicly debated the issue since the city sent notice to the King County Sheriff’s Office in April that it planned on canceling a nearly $1-million contract with them for police services. The move was in protest of a site near the city being put on a finalist list for a sex-offender halfway house. Although no financial costs regarding a possible new contract will be discussed at the meeting – city officials will wait until possible negotiations begin before releasing such figures – council members will discuss the services offered by King County and those offered by the city’s possible new contracting partner, the city of Snoqualmie.
