Beating the heat

With the mercury rising to the top of thermometers this summer, the Snoqualmie Tribe and the Mount Si Senior Center are providing spaces for locals to cool off.

Mount Si Senior Center is open until 7 p.m. on weekday evenings, providing a place for hot people to cool off.

The Tribe opened its new cooling center on Wednesday and Thursday, July 11-12, at its annex building, 8096 Railroad Ave., the former headquarters of the casino authority that is located across from the railroad depot. Chairs, water and restrooms were available to the Tribe’s elders and the community at large.

On Wednesday afternoon, the cooling center was a cool 71 degrees Fahrenheit, said Randy “Fuzzy” Fletcher, emergency management director for the Tribe.

That was pretty darn cool compared to the heat outside; on the pavement in front of Carmichael’s True Value hardware store, the thermometer maxed out at 120.
