Wildcats overcome one more hurdle

The Mount Si wrestling team hosted Skyline last week and came away with a huge 55-22 victory. It was a big unknown for Mount Si as they had not faced Skyline since the 2001 season.

Mount Si dominated the pin category, with eight vs. the Spartans’ three. With some other key matches winning by decision, there was no doubt which team would declare victory.

The night started with Kyle Heath at 112 pounds taking on the Spartans’ Brian Krise. Heath turned his opponent quickly and pinned him with 31 seconds left in the first round.

At 119 pounds, the Wildcats’ Ryan Makela defeated Skyline’s Jeremy Veilleux with a 6-0 decision. The Spartans avenged the two previous losses at 125 pounds as Tyler Steciw defeated veteran Joe Taklo. Taklo scored first with a takedown, but Steciw quickly reversed. The match went into the third round tied at seven each, but then Steciw controlled for an additional 12 points for a 19-8 major decision.

The Spartans notched another win as Larson Caldwell pinned the Wildcats’ Joseph Guiard at 130 pounds. It took three rounds but in the end, Caldwell recorded the pin with 1:26 left in the match. The win tied the score at 10 for each team.

At 135 pounds, the Wildcats started a roll of successive wins. Jacob Lund pinned the Spartans’ Adam Miller with four seconds left in the first round. Lund, who has come on strong late this season, wants to show people what he can do. “I want to step it up and wrestle to my potential,” said Lund. That was followed by a pin from Vince Vasquez in the third round at 140 pounds. Vasquez used a freestyle roll to bring his opponents shoulders to the mat.
