Mount Si brought home medals for the efforts of three wrestlers at last weekend’s state tournament, held at the Tacoma Dome.

Leading the list for the Wildcats was Dexter Moetului, who took second in the 215-pound class. Teammate Kyle Heath took third in the 112-pound class and Ryan Makela took eighth in the 119-pound class. It was one of the best showings Mount Si has had in recent years.

“The whole team was great this year, we accomplished a lot of the goals we set,” said coach Jeff Newcomer. “I am really proud of all of them. They worked hard to meet those goals.”

Moeutului was a machine on the mat all day, beating several wrestlers touted as possible state champions. Moetului, who placed third last year, had to get three successive wins to get into the finals. He first defeated Kennedy’s Marc Avery-Airhart 5-2. Next he defeated Kelso’s Kyle Hoppe, a wrestler much more muscular looking then Moeutului. Kelso coaches seemed confident that Hoppe would beat Moeutului, but confidence was no match for the “Dex” factor.
