Mount Si star junior forward Kristen Berndt scored four goals and senior midfielder Angela Jones added another as the Wildcats girls’ varsity soccer team built a 3-0 lead then cruised to a 5-2 victory over the Issaquah Indians in KingCo 3A action last Thursday, Oct. 17, at home.

The win lifted Mount Si into a tie with Issaquah in the Valley Division standings, just two points out of the final playoff spot. Erin Frame scored the two Issaquah goals.

“[It] finally happened. Kristen busted loose for a few goals and we had a lot of opportunities and it finally came together. This is the way they can play,” said Mount Si coach Bruce Caldwell.

The domination for Mount Si started 30 seconds into the game, when Berndt took a pass from junior midfielder Erin Hart and broke away from the Issaquah defense. Berndt kicked it past Issaquah goalkeeper Laura Berkman and into the back of the net, giving the Wildcats the first goal.

The Indians tried to tie the game in the sixth minute, but Mount Si junior goalkeeper Kristen Travis made what turned out to be the save of the game, as she cradled the ball along the goal line – barely preventing it from going in.

In the 17th minute, sophomore midfielder Whitney Chelgren broke away down the field and got deep into the corner to the right of Berkman. It seemed as if Issaquah had stopped another chance, but Chelgren found Jones positioned on the other side of Berkman and Jones rammed the one-timer home to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
