The Mount Si baseball team enjoyed a surprisingly nice run in last week’s Kingco Tournament at Bellevue’s Bannerwood Park. However, that run ended in heartbreak.

It all started last Tuesday night, May 8, with a game against Newport. Coming in, many would have not expected that the Wildcats, who were beaten 18-4 by the Knights in their previous meeting, would stand a chance against the defending state 3A champs. However, clutch hitting, and even tougher defense combined to help Mount Si pull off likely the biggest upset of the season in Kingco 3A baseball.

Ian Atkinson went 4-5 to lead the Wildcats to a stunning 7-3 win over Newport, ending the state title defense for the Knights before it even had a real chance to start.

Mount Si opened scoring with a run in the first, then the Knights scored three in the second to take a 3-1 lead. The Wildcats tied it in the third with two runs and scored twice more in the fourth to take the lead. However, the game was not decided until the sixth inning.
