Coming into this week, it seemed as if the pieces might be in place for a run for the postseason for the Mount Si girls’ softball team, especially after their dramatic comeback win over Interlake April 21. However, the Wildcats weren’t able to deliver against the Bellevue Wolverines.

On Monday, April 23, in the first of what were essentially two straight games that would likely decide Mount Si’s postseason hopes, Bellevue pitcher Ali Stanford fired a one-hitter, and Megan Melby hit a solo home run to center field as the Wolverines made quick work of the Wildcats, 5-0.

The Wildcats on Wednesday, April 25, were looking to rebound from the Bellevue loss and stay in the hunt, but errors and a big Skyline inning led to a 4-1 Mount Si loss to the Spartans. Katie Brett went 2-3 and pitched well on the mound, giving up two earned runs in six innings and striking out four. Two errors, though, cost Mount Si.

The Wildcats hosted Newport April 26. Erin Tsutsumoto hit a two-run home run in the first, and the Knights used that to build a 3-0 lead before a single out was recorded in the inning. The Knights then held on despite a late Mount Si rally for a 3-2 victory.

“I liked what I saw the whole game, other than once again we spotted a real good team three runs right out of the gate, but we kept battling back. I really felt we were going to win this game,” said Wildcat coach Larry White.

The scoring for the Knights started off early, as mentioned. However, Brett settled down and retired the next three hitters in a row to get out of any further trouble. She then proceeded to throw a great game, only giving up four more hits and striking out six. The defense helped mightily, as well, as Shaw nailed a runner trying to steal second base in the third, and forced a Knight runner out at home on a blown sacrifice fly attempt in the fifth.
