It was a mixed result at the Kingco girls’ tennis tournament last week at Skyline for Mount Si High School’s competitors.

On the singles side, Allie Van Bryce carried the scarlet and gray’s hopes. In her first match, she played Skyline’s Kristin Klein, who proved she deserved the sixth seed in the singles.

Klein won 6-0, 6-1, sending Van Bryce into the loser’s bracket, where she went up against Issaquah’s Florie Kim. This match was a little closer, and Van Bryce won 6-3, 7-5 to advance to a meeting with Mercer Island’s Erica Leong. The success for Van Bryce turned out to be short-lived, as Leong rolled 6-1, 6-0, knocking Van Bryce out of the postseason.

In the doubles, Mariana Zanella and Kelsey Wise were Mount Si’s representatives, and they opened the tournament with a match against Issaquah’s Ariel Hagen and Selena Lustig. The Eagle pair, who came in as the sixth seed in the doubles event, showed why they deserved that seeding, as they won 6-3, 6-1. The loss by Zanella and Wise sent the Valley ladies to the loser’s bracket, where they took on Liberty’s Kailie Badyal and Meghan McNeil. Mount Si’s pair won 6-4, 6-3, moving them ahead for a match with another pair of Issaquah Eagles, Mika Asaba and Alyssa Wilson. The match turned out to be a barnburner, but the Issaquah players won in three, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, ending the Wildcats’ season.

Winning the singles was Bellevue’s Nikole Novikova, and the doubles went to Mercer Island’s Chelsea Bailey and Michele Zemplenyi.

Mount Si finished the season in last place in league, with zero wins in eight tries.
