Mount Si boys tennis finishes season

The Mount Si boys tennis team finished the regular season last week at Interlake. For Mount Si it was a special ending to what has been a difficult season, going winless in their nine league meets.

That special ending came courtesy of senior John Lockie. Lockie had not played competitive tennis prior to his arrival with the Wildcat program in his junior year, and going into his match with the Saints’ John Huang, had not won a single match in his high- school career. That all changed as Lockie outlasted Huang in a two-and-a-quarter hour long thriller 7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker), 1-6, 6-4, for Mount Si’s lone match win of the contest.

“It was an exciting match to watch, as John was relentless in coming to the net on almost every point, grinding out some amazing volleys. It was fun for the entire team to cheer him on as they all knew that John wanted to end his high school career with a win,” said coach Olson in an e-mail.

Interlake won eight other matches to take the meet. Good fights were put up by Mount Si’s Greg Beckmann, who fell to Justin Kruinger 4-6, 5-7 in singles; and Wildcats doubles pair Tim Coleman and Kendall Brenneise, who fell to Saints Ryan Vu and Jose Diaz 3-6, 5-7.

The future looks good.

“We’re looking forward to a great year next year with all of the guys coming up from JV,” said Olson.

Runners qualify for districts

Three Mount Si runners qualified for the upcoming district cross country meet. Katie Hogan, Brad Allen and Drake daPonte each ran smart races, passing more than 20 runners to make the cut of the top 25 in Kingco.
