P>`Cats nearly steal one from Skyline
The Mount Si Wildcats varsity baseball team nearly pulled out a
win against a tough Skyline team last week, losing by one run, 5-4.
Skyline took charge early, scoring a run on a bases loaded sacrifice fly
to center field. They would score again in the second inning on a steal
from first to second. The throw by Matt Poth to second tagged out the stealing
runner, but the runner on third scored.
The string of hits would continue in the third for Skyline. With one
out, a Spartan batter tagged a double then scored on a single to right field. At
the end of the third, it was Skyline 3, Mount Si 0.
Finally, in the top of the fourth, Marc Dahm led the offensive
efforts on a line drive base hit to center. Sean Sattler followed with a sacrifice
bunt to move Dahm to second. Finally, with two outs and Dahm on third,
Aaron Svarthumle singled, scoring Dahm for Mount Si’s first run.
Skyline would score another in the fourth when, with two outs, a
batter’s single scored a run. Mount Si would answer in the fifth, though.
David LaBelle doubled to lead off the offensive effort. Brent Clarke came in as
a pinch runner for LaBelle and then moved to second on a Tyler
Osborn single. Veteran Nick Roeber then laid down a perfect bunt and beat the
throw to first, loading the bases with no outs.
Marc Dahm then pounded a nice single to center, scoring both
Clarke and Osborn. The score going into the bottom of the fifth was Mount Si
3, Skyline 4.
Skyline would make it tough though, scoring one run on a
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth to take a two-run lead.
In the sixth, Mount Si made a tremendous effort to come back,
when Svarthumle singled to left and finally scored on a single by LaBelle. But
it wasn’t enough as the inning closed with no more runs.
Matt Poth pitched six innings, giving up seven hits, five runs, three
of which were earned. He walked three and struck out two. David
LaBelle went 2-for-3 and had a double and RBI.
“This is one of the best games we have played all year,” said coach
Gary McGregor. “We executed at the plate and on the bases. Matt Poth pitched
a great game.
“We will go into the playoffs with no pressure on us. I think we can
surprise a couple of teams,” McGregor added.
The playoffs start this weekend.
