Mount Si sports for the week

Freshman thump Totems

The Mount Si freshman football team kicked off their 2006 season with a dominating performance over the Sammamish Totems last week 27-0.

Boys play in jamboree

The Mount Si boys’ golf team traveled to Sumner last week to participate in a season-starting jamboree against Sumner and Curtis High Schools. Final score was Curtis 84, Sumner 74 and Mount Si 60. Mount Si is a young team with four freshman on the squad, but they held their own. Leading the ‘Cats was Tonner Ostby and Bradley Harrelson with 12 points each. Luke Dietsch and Matt Prewett each had 10 points. Jeff Hoyopotubbi, Bryce Caralus and Sam Joselyn each had eight and Ian Sansbury had seven.

Wildcats do well at season opener

In the annual class race held at the beginning of each season at Lake Sammamish State Park, several Wildcats turned in strong performances. Each race is run with participants from the same graduating class. Top finishers for Mount Si were Drake da Ponte, who took second for the junior class, and Owen Strom, who took third for the junior class. Brett Duncan ran a strong race, placing 10th among freshman

For the seniors, Robbie Pekara and Hillary Burk ran strong races. First-time cross-country runners Kayla Supkoff and Zach Whetsel competed in the sophomore race.

Tennis struggles in season opener

The Mount Si boys’ tennis team opened their season Tuesday, Sept. 5, with a loss to Woodinville in a non-league match.

The Falcons swept all nine contests against their Wildcats opponents. However, two Mount Si singles players put up good fights in defeat. Stephen Salmon gave Woodinville’s Peter Carlson all he could handle, before falling 5-7, 5-7 to the Falcon opponent; and Jerrett Rhoads did the same to Woodinville’s Jared Rice before going down 4-6, 4-6 to the Falcons player. Teammate Bryce Wilson was pleased with Rhoads’ result.

“Jerrett did a nice job. It was his first varsity match ever,” Wilson said. Wildcat tennis coach Gary Olson praised Salmon’s effort.

“(Salmon) gave that guy (Carlson) a really good run for his money,” Olson said

All of the other singles matches were no contest; three out of those four ended in 0-6, 0-6 defeats for the Mount Si players. Doubles was pretty much the same story, except Wildcats Derek Aldrich and Jesse Ransavage tried to give their Woodinville opponents a bit of a scare in their doubles contest. However, Falcons Connor Vorald and Nick Etheredge fought off that challenge well, and Mount Si’s pair fell 2-6, 3-6.

Aldrich credited Woodinville’s strong serving for their performance.

“Well, Woodinville had a very good serve, different serves, like top spin and high hops on it,” said Aldrich, adding that their excellent serving was difficult to adjust to.

Volleyball opens season strong

The Mount Si’s girls’ volleyball team got the 2006 season off to a great start last Thursday, Sept. 7, as the Wildcats went to Seattle and swept Garfield in three games. Scores were 25-19, 25-15 and 25-23 as Mount Si won the first of four crossover matches to start the season with Kingco 4A opponents.

Leading the way for Mount Si was junior middle blocker Sine’ Schrimer. She had eight digs and four kills. Senior setter Faith Hutcherson added 17 assists to the effort, and sophomore Miranda Pratt pitched in six kills and digs apiece to pace the Wildcats.

“It was a good match,” said Mount Si coach Bonnie Foote by e-mail to the Valley Record. “We played pretty consistent volleyball, even keel. We are learning on keeping our composure and staying even keel the whole match and the girls did a great job of that.”

The match was held at the old Lincoln High School campus in Wallingford; the main Garfield campus in central Seattle is closed for construction.

Mount Si earlier this week opened their home schedule against Eastlake; the team than Thursday travels to Bothell to face the Cougars.
