Wildcats pull out win against Liberty

In a soggy game, the Wildcat JV softball team took on visiting Liberty last week and pulled out a 7-4 win. Late rains caused the contest to begin in a mist and the ‘Cats came out flat, giving up two runs in the first inning. Hannah Mortenson made an amazing catch in right field in the second to save a run and end the inning.

Liberty tallied two more in the third and the girls took their turn at the plate, down 0-4. Rachel Nyberg blasted her first extra base hit of the year, a stand-up triple, scoring Kayla Stewart, who had walked. Nyberg scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-4.

As rains got stronger in the fourth, the “D” held as Nyberg struck out two. With two outs in the bottom of the inning and Lindsey Bertram on second, the bats came alive. Cortney Tubbs singled, driving in two runs to tie the game. Stewart followed with a single, giving the girls their first lead. Nyberg beat out an infield dribbler to put two runners on base and April Saffell’s long fly was misplayed, scoring two more and putting the ‘Cats ahead 7-4. With increasingly slippery conditions, the umpire called the game and the girls celebrated a come-from-behind victory.
