Sports at Mount Si for the week

JV downs Ellensburg

The Mount Si Wildcat JV baseball team traveled to Ellensburg recently and came home with their first win of the season, a 13-0 win in five innings. Freshman Zack Robinson led the way with three hits and fellow freshman Kyle Cantilini pitched a two hit shutout. Sophomore catcher Eric Ward chipped in two hits and also had two RBIs. First baseman Justin Poth, a sophomore, contributed three RBIs in the ‘Cats first win of the year.



JV defeats Mercer Island

The Mount Si Wildcat JV baseball team won their first league game at Mercer Island, 6-1. Sophomore Ian Brown and junior Dan Reeves each had two hits to lead the ‘Cats to victory. Mount Si scored four times in the first inning and never looked back. RBI singles by sophomore Evan Aaltonen and freshman Kyle Cantilini and an RBI ground out by sophomore Justin Poth did the damage in the first. Ian Brown led off the second inning with a double and then went to third base on a wild pitch and then a couple of pitches later scored on another wild pitch from the Islander pitcher. Cantilini picked up the win by throwing six good innings and striking out two. Freshman Zack Robinson pitched the seventh inning in relief of Cantilini, striking out two batters.


JV wins in non-league action

Freshman Zack Robinson led the JV wildcat baseball team to victory against Black Hills in Tumwater with his pitching effort and also with his bat, in a 5-0 shutout victory.

Robinson had three hits, scored two runs, stole two bases and pitched into the sixth inning, giving up only three hits. Sophomore shortstop Evan Aaltonen chipped in two hits in the nine-hit attack for the Wildcats. The ‘Cats scored three times in the fourth inning to break up a scoreless tie. Robinson singled to left and then stole second. Junior left fielder Dan Reeves sent Robinson to third base on his base hit. Reeves then stole second base. Freshman right fielder Kyle Cantilini grounded out with Robinson scoring on the play and Reeves going to third. Sophomore Justin Poth then walked and stole second base. Aaltonen then singled, sending Reeves home and Poth to third base. Poth scored on an infield ground out by Sophomore catcher Eric Ward. Junior center fielder Mikel Ushler started the fifth inning off with a single and then promply stole second base. Robinson then moved Ushler to third base on his base hit and Ushler scored on Reeves sacrifice fly ball to center. But the Cats’ were not done yet. Cantilini got a base hit to right center field, sending Robinson to third base. Sophomore first baseman Poth grounded out, with Robinson scoring on the play for the fifth run of the game.


JV drops game to Liberty

The Wildcat JV baseball team lost a heart-breaker game at Liberty 6-5 in 11 innings. Liberty scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eleventh inning with no outs. Sophomore pitcher Justin Poth started on the hill for the JV Wildcats and breezed through the first inning, but ran into trouble when Liberty scored four times in the second inning. Mikel Ushler came into the game in relief for Poth and pitched four good innings, giving up only one more run. The ‘Cats tied the game by getting the bats going for one run in the fourth inning, two runs in the fifth inning and one run in the seventh inning. Junior left fielder Dan Reeves led the hit attack with three doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs. Poth had three hits on the night with two of those hits being doubles. Ushler scored two runs, had two hits and a double. Freshman Kyle Cantilini pitched four scoreless innings striking out four Liberty batters. Cantilini gave way to fellow freshman Zack Robinson for the final two innings. Robinson took the loss, but pitched very well. The Mount Si JV baseball team record stands at 3-7 overall as they are at the half-way point in the season. Zack Robinson leads the JV team in hitting with a .424 batting average on 14 hits. Cantilini leads the pitching staff with two wins and an ERA of 1.65 in 17 innings.
