Week in sports

A look at Mount Si sports for the week.

Mount Si tennis has difficult week

Mount Si’s boys tennis team fell last Monday to Kingco 4A Bothell in a nonleague contest, 7-2.

The two lone Wildcat victories came in singles competition, as No. 1 Dane Fenton took three sets to fight off a good effort from the Cougars’ Tim Rogers, by the scores of 2-6, 7-5 and 6-3; and No. 6 Tyler Emsky handed Bothell’s Steve Nguyen a 6-4, 7-6 loss. All seven of the other matches played went in Bothell’s favor.

Sammamish dominated Mount Si on Thursday, 7-2. The two Wildcat victories came again in singles as Fenton, playing No. 2 singles in the match, defeated the Totems’ Nathan Schaeffer 6-3, 6-2. No. 4 Tim Coleman rallied to defeat Sammamish’s Willie Foster in three sets, 5-7, 6-3 and 6-3. The remaining singles matches were all Sammamish wins.

Doubles matches were all swept by Sammamish, but Mount Si put up a good fight in one and a great fight in another. The No. 2 doubles pair of Greg Beckmann and Blake Kinghorn won the first set 6-4, but then fell in the next two sets 3-6 and 1-6, to their Totem opponents, Ravish Khanna and Aman Singh. The No. 3 doubles unit of John Lockie and Emsky won a tough first set 7-6 (9-7 on the tiebreaker), then lost the next set to their Sammamish opponents Peter Kim and Arni Gagnidze, 6-7 (4-7). In a super tiebreaker third set called due to impending darkness, Lockie and Emsky fell 6-10 to their Totem counterparts.

Wildcat Tennis coach Gary Olson praised Coleman.

“His consistency has really improved this year and I am very proud of how he fights for every point,” Olson said in an e-mail.
