The Mount Si boys’ tennis team was routed by the very tough Mercer Island Islanders last week with MI winning eight of the nine matches played.

The Islanders won all six singles matches, only giving up two points in those matches combined. The lone bright spot for the Wildcats came in doubles. Ryan Schwab and Stephen Salmon won a three-set thriller against their MI opponents Sean Gorey and Adam Coe. After Schwab and Salmon won the first set 6-2, they lost the second set by the same score to the Islander duo. The Mount Si pair then came back and took the third set, and match, 6-3. The other two doubles matches were all MI, with only one point combined given up by the Islanders in those two matches.

There were three doubles exhibitions, all MI wins.

Wildcat coach Gary Olson, in an e-mail to the Valley Record, praised the Islanders. “They are amazing tennis players and very gracious,” Olson said. The coach also praised his team. “The scores don’t show it, but the Mount Si boys definitely played up,” Olson said. “It’s fun to watch how much they’ve improved and how they go out and compete hard every match, even though most of their opponents have so much more experience than they do. I’m very proud of them.”

A nonleague match with Juanita scheduled for Oct. 3 was rained out.

Mount Si wraps up the regular season with matches at Issaquah (Wednesday) and Newport (next Monday). Both the Eagles and Knights are among the top teams in the league, so two more tough tests await on the way to the postseason.

As things stand currently, look for Bryce Wilson, Salmon and Derek Aldrich to possibly play in the postseason, but others may get a chance, particularly in doubles. First serves for both matches are at 3:30 p.m.

Two wins for Mount Si boys golf

The Mount Si Wildcat boys’ golf team opened the week last week on a winning note. The Wildcats defeated the Sammamish Totems Oct. 3, by forfeit after the Totems failed to bring a full contingent of golfers. Sammamish’s delegation consisted of four golfers. Medalist honors were shared by Matt Prewett and Mike Rutledge. Both fired rounds of 38. Luke Dietsch shot a 39, and Jon Larson fired a 40 to pace the Mount Si effort.

The Wildcats closed out last week with another win, this time over Liberty Oct. 5. Larson shot a round of 35 to guide Mount Si to a 192-214 victory. Rutledge fired a 38 and Prewett and Bradley Harrelson each shot 39 to help the Wildcats.

Skyline dominates but ‘Cats perform

The fast and furious runners of the Mount Si cross country team traveled to Klahanie last week to take on the Skyline Spartans and Issaquah Eagles. Skyline won the races but the Wildcats turned in several outstanding performances.

The boys started the race in a full out sprint but in the end, Owen Strom and MacMcDevitt took eighth and ninth overall. Brett Duncan finished 22nd and Drake da Ponte rolled his ankle on the rugged course, dropping him back to 30th. Steve Eyetel dropped a full 40 seconds from his personal best in only his second race of the season.

For the girls, Alex Rudd went out with the leaders, missing second by two seconds. Megan Past was the second Mount Si runner to cross the finish line in an amazing 21;48. Alix Crandell took third for the Wildcats with a time of 23:30, Brooke Moorehead took fourth for Mount Si with a time of 23:43 and Wendy Hecker took fifth.
