Girls lose heartbreaker in seventh inning
The Mount Si varsity girls softball team played host Monday night to
the Newport Knights. And being the great hosts they are, the Wildcats
allowed their opponents to not only get into the game at the last minute, but to
win it due to costly errors in the 8-2 loss.
Mount Si scored first in the third inning when Vanessa Riley
scored from third on a wild pitch. Then in the fourth, Therese Duvall smacked
a single scoring Heather Lewis from third.
It looked as though the game was in the bag as both teams headed
for the seventh inning. Newport’s rise started when Mount Si pitcher
Allison Moorhead hit the Knight’s leadoff batter. From there, errors became
the norm for the Wildcat defense, allowing a total of eight runs to be
scored. Mount Si never recovered and the Knights notched the win.
“Allison is pitching a heck of a lot better than we thought she would as
a freshman,” said coach Dirk Hansen after the game. “But we’re not
playing with confidence yet.”
Moorhead had six strikeouts in the game.
