Track teams dominate Interlake, Samamish in first league meet

The Mount Si High School boys’ track team defeated Interlake and Sammamish Thursday, March 20, in the first meet of the year by a final score of 83-48-47.

There were many strong early-season performances, and the Wildcats swept the throwing events.

Josh Davis won the shot put with a personal best throw of 51 feet, two inches, and the discus with a toss of 156 feet, five inches. Kyle Stevens, in his first league meet ever, triumphed in the javelin with a throw of 151 feet, ten inches. Jake Tweten had has usual strong meet by picking up third-place finishes in the shot and discus and second place in the javelin.

On the track, Colin Van Slyke placed second in both the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles while Drake da Ponte started his senior season off with a bang, winning the 800 and the 1,600. Owen Strom took the 3,200 and Frank McLaughlin ran in 51.7 seconds to win the 400.

Transfer student Brandon Roddewig performed very well, winning the high jump with a leap of six feet, two inches, placing second in the pole vault and placing fourth in the long jump. Finally, the Cats won both relays. McLaughlin, along with super freshmen Shelby Williams, Austin Rillos, and Robert Sharps, won the 4 X 100 in a time of 47.1 seconds while Colin Alexander, da Ponte, Strom and Williams combined to dominate the 4 X 400 with a time of 3:46.9.

‘Cats girls crush opponents

The Mount Si High School girls track team opened their 2008 season by demolishing the Interlake Saints and Sammamish Totems last week, 122 to 32, in cold and wet conditions.

Summer Nash dominated the hurdles, winning the 100-meter event with a time of 17.6 seconds. Nash was followed closely by Diane Keller with a time of 17.8 seconds. Third place went to Lauren Snead with a time of 18.3 seconds.

Helen Hasbun opened the meet by winning the 100 meter with a time of 12.95 seconds, followed by teammate Kayla Mclain with a time of 13.6 seconds. McLain went on to win the 200 meter with a time of 28.4 seconds, followed by Natalie Opsvig, who posted a time of 28.5 seconds. Megan Past won the 800 meter with a time of 2:33.3, followed by teammate Dannah Parsons with a time of 2:36.7. In the 1,600 meter, Past again won with a time of 5:37.2, followed closely by Alex Rudd who posted a time of 5:43.1 Rudd then went on to win the 3,200 meter with a time of 12:19.9 while teammate Brooke Moorhead posted a time of 14:09.5, good enough for fourth place.

Katie Woolsey won the 400 meter with a time of 62.1 seconds, followed closely by teammate Taylor Robbins who posted a time of 66.5 seconds. Woolsey also won the javelin with a toss of 101 feet, 6 inches.

In the long jump, Symone Shaw won, posting a distance of 16 feet, seven inches. Diane Keller took fourth in the event with a distance of 14 feet, six-and-a-half inches. Stephanie Burk posted a second place finish in the triple-jump with a distance of 30 feet, 11.75 inches. She also won the high jump, clearing four feet, 10 inches. Teammate Diane Keller cleared 4 feet, 6 inches, good enough for third place.

Wildcat Corina Linder threw for 83 feet to win the discus, followed by teammate Kelsey Tarp, who took second with a distance of 80 feet, 11 inches. Nash took third with a distance of 80 feet, 11 inches, and Alisha Larion took fourth with a distance of 76 feet, six inches.

Katelyn Walker led a group of ‘Cats in the shot, winning the event with a throw of 31 feet, 10 inches, followed by Tarp with a distance of 31 feet, six inches and Larion with a distance of 31 feet, one inch.

The 4 X 100 relay team of Hasbun, McLain, Shaw and Woolsey posted a time of 52.4 seconds for the win, and with the help of Opsvig instead of Shaw, won the 4 X 200 in a time of 1:52.8. The 4 X 400 relay team of Marley Robbins, Past, Dannah Parsons and Taylor Robbins won in a time of 4:29.5.
