Three to state: Mount Si golfers Robinson, Dorn, Burns claim second at districts

Golf bags rattle as Julia Dorn, Maggie Robinson and Danielle Burns trundle down the fairway at Mount Si Golf Course.

While the occasional shot goes awry, the ones that land on target get cheers. The three Mount Si golf team players are relaxed, slipping in a practice session as they ready for the district tournament May 16 at Kent’s Riverbend Golf Course.

As Dorn trills a song, Burns remarks, “there’s a lot of love in this group.”

The girls had a great showing Monday, taking a second place title behind Mercer Island; Robinson shot a 90 for second place, while Dorn shot a 92 for second place. Burns, who attended as first alternate, discovered she had a spot on Friday. She shot a 90, tying for seventh with Robinson. All three girls qualified for state play this week.

“This is an absolutely wonderful result and I couldn’t be happier,” coach Brandon Proudfood told the Record. “To leave the Kingco tournament with two spots secured for districts and then be heading to state with three girls is an amazing result.”

Clearing league play last week, the Mount Si girls finished second at the Kingco 3A girls golf league tournament, held Monday, May 9, at Snohomish Golf Course.

Robinson finished fourth overall with an 86. Dorn was next at 18th with 96. Burns, took 23rd with a score of 99. Genna Magnan and Tabitha Dorn played at league, contributing to a good team total.

Dorn and Robinson made the first team of all-Kinco players. Burns received honorable mention.

The cut was lower than in previous years, “but all you can do is put yourself in position, and these girls did that job very well,” Proudfoot added.

Robinson, who played strong despite a back injury, is stoked to wrap up her senior year with a winning season, on the road to state as a trio, as she had hoped.

“This year was a lot of fun,” she said.

Dorn is working on her short game. She and Robinson have stayed within a handful of strokes each other all year; their high school golf career goes back together through freshman year.

“Maggie and I going out as seniors, co-captains, is awesome,” she said.

The state ticket was more than Burns had hoped for.

“I want to get the experience,” she prior to the tournament. “I’ve got two years left.”

State play is May 24 and 25 in Spokane. Senior Jack Kelly represents the boys’ team.
