JV team falls to West Valley

The Mount Si JV baseball team traveled to West Valley of Yakima recently to start the 2005 season.

After a tough bus ride over that found the team in winter-like conditions, the Wildcats were shut-out in the first game of the double-header 13-0 in five innings.

The Wildcats came back in the second game taking the lead 4-2 in the third inning. Chase Korsmo led off the game with a solid single and then stole second base. Keegan Riley singled and Korsmo scored from second base.

West Valley came back in the second inning and scored two runs, but the Wildcats picked up two runs of their own in the third. Kevin Sandin was safe at first base on an infield error. With two outs, Dan Reeves walked, and then both Sandin and Reeves advanced on a throwing error. Derek Aldrich then singled and both runners scored.

The Wildcats added two more runs in the fourth inning on a olo home run blast by Ryan Utesch. An RBI single by Riley scored Korsmo who had singled.

West Valley scored three runs in the sixth inning and then got the tying and winning runs in the seventh. Aldrich led the offense with three hits while Korsmo and Riley each had two. Thomas Taylor and Brian Olson both pitched well for Mount Si.

JV drops game to Inglemoor

The Mount Si JV baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Inglemoor recently, 5-4. Mount Si came out in the first inning and, with two outs, scored four runs. Keegan Riley doubled and Beau Davis walked to start off the rally. Derek Aldrich then drove in Riley with a base hit. Dan Reeves got an RBI when he singled to knock in Davis. Ryan Utesch followed with a single that drove in Aldrich and Reeves.

Inglemoor knocked in two runs in the first inning and added one each in the fifth and sixth innings. In the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings got the winning run on two hits. Davis and Riley both pitched well for Mount Si.

‘Cats defeat Totems

The Mount Si girls’ track team defeated Sammamish last week, 88-53. Seymone Shaw won the long jump with a great leap of 16 feet, 4 1/4 inches. This is one of the top jumps in the state so far this season. Shannon Posey also had one of the best javelin throws in the state by tossing 125 feet, 2 inches. Ellie Allen ran 12:00.1 in the 3,200 meter and also won the 1,600 meter. Boys thump Totems

Domination is the only way to describe the Mount Si boys track team win over the Sammamish Totems last week, 106-36. The win gives Mount Si a 2-0 record for the season despite no home field.

Once again it was an excellent team effort. Leading the way was Brady Barry, winning both the 100 and 200 meters as well as the long jump and a leg on the 4 X 100-meter relay team. Adam Rothgeb, Stefan Marth and Frank McLaughlin combined with Barry for a season-best time of 45.6 seconds. Rothgeb battled through the pain of a minor injury to coast to a victory in the 110-meter hurdles, as well as the triple jump.

Alex Grazda was a triple-event winner in the high jump, discus and, as usual, the javelin.

Joe Taklo toughed out wins in two of the hardest races in all of track, the 400 and 800 meter. Kyle Meyers pitched in with a win in the shot put while the 4 X 400 team of Taklo, Max Nelson, Thomas Goble and Drake daPonte finished the meet with a victory.

The highlight of the meet was the 300-meter hurdles. With Rothgeb hurting, three teammates picked up the slack and ran the race despite never having trained for it. While they could not vanquish their Totem foe, Mike Montgomery, Kyle Stanton-Wyman and Robbie Pekara finished second, third and fourth, respectively. In this same team spirit, Stefan Marth took his shot at the triple jump, earning a second place to edge ailing teammate Dan Floyd. Marth also earned another second in the javelin.

Other placers included Brad Allen with seconds in the 1,600 and 3,200 meter, Drake daPonte with a third in the 1,600 meter and Thomas Goble with third in the 400 meter. Montgomery took second in the pole vault, and Nick Johnston took second in the shot. Cary Purchase increased his personal best in the discus to place second. Jake Tweten took third in both the shot and discus, and teammate Owen Strom earned his first varsity point by taking third in the 3,200 meter.

‘Cats pound Sammamish

The Mount Si JV fastpitch team picked up their first win last week with a lopsided 25-0 win over Sammamish last week. Twelve different girls scored runs with Samantha Riley leading the hit parade with three. Katie Brett pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine in five innings.
