The Week in sports

A look at Mount Si sports for the week.

Wildcats down Cedarcrest

In one of the toughest matches of the season, the Mount Si Wildcat wrestling team defeated the Cedarcrest Red Wolves 35-34 last week. The Red Wolves were ahead by 18 points with only three matches left for the night. It came down to Seth Merritt, Dex Moetului and Jeff Chapman to get the tie and the eventual win. All three would have to get a pin to tie the Red Wolves and force the tie-breaker decision. Merritt pinned a formidable opponent in Chris Cole with 40 seconds left in the match. Moetului then went on to pin his opponent at 215 pounds and Chapman won by forfeit to tie the match. From there, criteria are used to determine the winner and since Mount Si had won more matches than Cedarcrest, they were the meet winners.

“That was awesome; that was one of the best matches I have ever coached,” said head coach Jeff Newcomer. “It was amazing how the kids rose to the occasion and wanted the win. We were physically in shape and ready to go but we pulled out some incredible matches. I mean Kyle Heath beating Ty Howard for the first time was amazing. We had to have a pin from Seth to have a chance to win and then from Dex.

“I have head coached about 58 matches and that was by far at the top of the list as most memorable. Cedarcrest is a great program, and we got a lot of respect I think last night,” he said.

Other winners included Ryan Makala with a 7-5 decision, Kyle Heath with an 11-9 overtime decision over Ty Howard, Jacob Lund with a 5-2 decision, Jordan Sypher with a 9-1 major decision and Mac Donnell with an 8-6 decision over his opponent.
