Boys’ Track


Wildcat boys fall to Knights

Despite a lopsided score of 105 to 39, the Mount Si boys’ track team had some impressive individual performances. Brian Lewis scored three first-place finishes, winning the high jump, the long jump and the triple jump. In the high jump, he cleared 5 feet, 10 inches. In the long jump he cleared a distance of 18 feet, 5 inches and in the triple jump had a distance of 36 feet 9 3/4 inches.

Alex Grazda launched a great throw in the javelin clearing 149 feet, 6 inches, good enough for first place. He also took second in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.

Tyler Austin came through in the shorter distance running events taking second in both the 100 and 200. Teammate AJ Frye placed second in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet.

Steve Johnson ran a strong 400-meter race to place third, and freshman distance runner Brad Allen improved his 3,200 time by 30 seconds and placed second overall.


Girls’ Track

‘Cats lose close match

The Mount Si girls’ track team lost a close meet to Newport last week, 77-69. Meaghan Dunklee won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in personal best times of 18.7 and 53.3 seconds respectively. Nicole Remish won the 200 in 28.8 seconds and took second in the 100.

Maggie Olson won the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 2 1/4 inches and Kristen Berndt threw the Javelin 117 feet, 1 inch to take first in that event.

Amy Stauch won the discus with a personal best toss of 87 feet, 7 inches and Kelly Fletcher won the 400 meters in a time of 1:07.6.

Kali Roestel had a personal best in the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, 9 inches to take second.

The 4×100 relay of Remish, Berndt, Jessie Marley and Jordan Tipton ran 53.8 to take first. The 4×200 relay team of Remish, Roestel, Marley and Tipton ran 1:59 to win that event.


Softball

‘Cats fall to Skyline

The Mount Si JV softball team ran into a brick wall on Friday as Skyline handed the team their first loss by a score of 9-2. Against a fast, tough pitcher, the girls seemed frustrated until the fourth inning when Samantha Baldwin ripped a hard shot toward shortstop and ended up at first. Erika Evans blasted a long stand-up triple which scored Baldwin easily. Tricia Coccia then followed with another RBI single to tally the Wildcat’s second run.


Red Wolves fall hard to Mount Si

In a rain-shortened four-inning game, the Mount Si JV softball team defeated Lower Valley rivals 29-2. Mount Si put up 19 runs in the first inning off of 10 hits. Jesse Conway, Ericka Evans and Keera Kanuha all notched triples. All nine players scored at least two runs each and five different players had at least three hits. Evans led the parade with a 4-for-4 performance that included a team-high five RBIs. Amy Whitney, Kanuha, Conway and Evans scored four runs each, while Samantha Baldwin, Erin Caldwell and Amanda Frost scored three runs each.

It was a great team effort as the ‘Cats pounded out 20 hits.


Islanders defeat Red Wolves

Jessie Paull singled in Allison Stewart for the game-winning run as the Islanders edged the winless Red Wolves (0-5) 5-4. Paull was 2-for-4 in the game while Stewart picked up the win on the mound. Calli Webster and Dana Shephard each had doubles for Mercer Island (3-4). Webster added two RBIs as well.

Brittany Hinzman had a double and three RBIs for Cedarcrest and teammate Betsy Westermann had a double.


Knights edge ‘Cats

The Knights (3-3) got a standout performance from pitcher Becky Marker who pitched all 10 innings, allowing only one earned run. Mariel McDonald had the game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th to lift Newport past the Wildcats (4-2), 6-5. Kayla Jayne had a double and teammate Katie Morgan went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI for Mount Si. Emily White also went 2-for-3.


JV falls to Newport

Despite taking the lead in the third inning on scores by Brianna Campbell and Amy Whitney, the Mount Si Wildcats’ JV softball team fell to Newport 11-4.

After three straight walks, the Newport scoring gates opened and the team gave up seven runs. Mount Si came back and scored two more runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough. Erin Caldwell scored her first run of the year and Keera Kanuha picked up an RBI.


JV team defeats Bothell

Eight Wildcat JV tennis doubles teams defeated their Bothell opponents last week to give the Wildcats an 8-5 victory over the Cougars.

Winning their matches were Alina Plavsky/Krista Fink 8-4, Krisi Lund/Kylee Wickstrom 8-4, Gina Zanella/Daisy Ponce 8-5, Tove Garhart/Sarah Lengtis 8-1, Nena Gonzalez/Leah Coffey 8-5, Erin Middleton/Hayley Macri 8-6, Carmen Dunford/Laura Peacock 8-6 and Plavsky/Dulcinea McHugh 8-6.


Soccer

Team downs rivals

The Mount Si varsity boys’ soccer team dominated their Lower Valley rivals last week, eventually winning 2-0. Chris Ippolito scored the first goal 30 minutes into the game with a cross at the six-yard line from Patrick Davis. The Wildcats’ second goal came 20 minutes into the second half by Dan Barnes on a breakaway with the keeper out of the box. Nick Swanson provided the assist on the goal.

Eddie Becker dominated goalbox for the Wildcats, stopping everything that came his way.


‘Cats blast Totems

The Mount Si “C” soccer team won its third straight game last night with an overwhelming attack and a relentless defense, defeating Sammamish 9-0.

Jason Hunter led the attack with four goals followed by teammate David Smith, playing his first game of the season, scoring three. Steve Grace had two goals in the game.

Alex Crabtree led the defense from the sweeper position turning back attack after attack by the Totems. Jeff Lewis and Nick Benton shared the goal for the shut out.


JV boys win

Defeating their lower Valley rivals 3-0, the Mount Si JV boys’ soccer team played some impressive ball. The first goal was scored by Aaron Duncan with a spectacular header into the corner on an assist by Pano Dreves. Evan Lloyd scored the second goal in the first half with an assist from Colin Parsons. The third goal was scored in the second half of the game by Mike North with a ground shot to the corner. He was assisted by Oran Johnson.


Varsity wins close game

Pano Dreves started the scoring for Mount Si as the varsity soccer team defeated Liberty last week 2-1. Sean MaCrae assisted the goal by Dreves. Yosef Yetneberk scored the second goal with an assist from Dan Talevich in the second half for the win.


‘Cats lose match to Totems

Mount Si worked the ball hard for the entire match last week against Sammamish but fell short in the end, losing 2-1. Dan Barnes scored the lone goal for Mount Si in the 16th minute off an assist by Nick Swanson tying the game. But Sammamish came back with a goal by Fedie Molina in the 74th minute for the lead and eventual win.


JV boys down Interlake

The Mount Si JV boys’ soccer team pulled out an impressive win against Interlake last week 4-1. Dane Portschellor started the scoring off an assist by Jorge Cerda. Aaron Duncan scored on a free kick by Oran Johnson. Cerda scored on an assist by Portschellor and the final goal came from Dan Neitson.


‘C’ soccer team improves record

David Smith scored the only goal in a contest with Newport last week to give the Wildcats a 1-0 win increasing their record to 4-1. That goal came in the seventh minute.

The team made several attacks on goal with Steve Grace just missing with an off-balance, left-footed shot.

Defensively, the strong play of Alex Crabtree, Nic Donate, Ian Falconer and Ruji Walton-House made the difference. The player of the game was Jeff Lewis in the goal who made several saves.




Golf

‘Cats lose by one stroke

The Mount Si girls’ golf team lost a close match to Mercer Island last week 266-265. Leading the ‘Cats was Jess Sanford who was medalist for the match with a 48. Helping Jess was Tara and Chelsea Eddings, Stacy
