Wildcat boys’ tennis shows some strength

It was a busy week for the Mount Si boys’ tennis team as they played three contests.

On Sept. 26, the Wildcats traveled to Liberty and fell to the Patriots. Liberty won seven of nine matches played.

The lone Mount Si win in singles went to Stephen Salmon. Salmon easily defeated Frank Stanasek 6-4, 6-2. The Wildcats gave Liberty scares in a number of other singles matches, as well.

Derek Aldrich won the first set of his match against the Patriots’ Paul Szilard 7-5, but Szilard won the next two sets to grab the match. Ryan Schwab likewise won the first set of his match 7-5 against Liberty’s Nathan Kato, but Kato came back and also won the next two sets to take that match. Nick Schwarzmiller and Jerrett Rhoads gave their Patriot opponents trouble, too, but the Liberty players successfully fought those challenges off and won those matches, as well.

Salmon also participated in the Wildcats’ lone doubles win as he paired with Kevin Sandin to beat Stanaszek and Mike Isabella of the Patriots 2-6, 7-6 and 1-0 (10-6 in a super tiebreaker) in a hard-fought match.

Schwarzmiller and Isaac Farrar won the first set of their match with Liberty’s Dan Huff and David Panks 6-1, but the Liberty pair rebounded and won the next two sets to take the match.

The Wildcats played Bellevue Sept. 26 and the Wolverines left Mount Si with a nine-match sweep. Most matches were easy Bellevue wins, but there were two Wildcats who gave their opponents a tough time. Aldrich lost his first set 2-6 to the Wolverines’ C.J. Smeraldo, then forced a deciding third set with a 7-6 (7-3 tie-breaker) victory in set two. Aldrich then was sent packing 1-6 in the third frame, costing him the match. Rhoads gave Bellevue’s Maxim Kozlov a tough fight, but fell 4-6, 5-7.

Mount Si struggled against Interlake Sept. 27 as the Wildcats won only one of the nine matches played. That win came courtesy of Rhoads. The senior, who is competing in tennis for the first time this fall, beat the Saints’ Derek Zhao 6-4, 3-6 and 6-2. Zhao, coming into the match, had eight years of competitive tennis under his belt, but Rhoads didn’t let the experience factor bother him. “I kind of just wanted to take things deep [and] see how he approached his shots. [Zhao] used a lot of topspin, so I knew I had to wait for the ball to come down before I came up and placed my shot. I used that kind of strategy throughout the game,” Rhoads said.

Aldrich, for the third straight match, went to three sets against his opponent. Once again, however, his opponent took care of business. In this case it was Interlake’s Paul Lin who won 6-4, 0-6 and 7-5. Despite the losses, going to three sets against some tough competition helped his confidence and he expects to continue to give people fits. “I’m totally confident with myself, [a] lot more than I used to play. I’m ready to get going on upcoming matches and give a bunch of people some scares,” Aldrich said.

The other matches all went easily to Saints players.

Mount Si is at Mercer Island Thursday. The Islanders are one of the perennial top teams in Kingco 3A boys’ tennis, so it will be a difficult test for the Wildcats. First serve is at 3:30 p.m.
