Mercer Island’s Duke Biggers scored twice and Colin Rigby had a pair of scores to help lift the Islanders over Cedarcrest 4-2. Rigby scored twice in the first half for Mercer Island (2-0). Matt Mundy and Trevor Gillie each scored for the Red Wolves (0-2).

“It was a sloppy game,” Mercer Island coach Steve Newman said. “The field conditions made a huge difference.”


‘Cats squeak past Indians

A lone goal by Mount Si’s Drew Arenth at the two-minute mark was enough to give the Wildcats a 1-0 win in boys’ varsity soccer action over Issaquah.

Kellon Patterson was credited with the shutout for the Wildcats. Arenth scored the game’s only goal after picking up a through ball from Evan Lamon. Mount Si controlled the field both offensively and defensively throughout the game.


JV loses to Issaquah

Nine minutes into the game, the Issaquah Indians scored their first goal and added another in the second half to defeat the Mount Si boys’ junior-varsity soccer team 2-0.

The ‘Cats defense was stingy for most of the game with a few exceptions, playing with heart and determination despite the weather.


‘C’ team pounds Newport

Playing through rain, snow and sleet, the Mount Si boys’ “C” soccer team defeated the Newport Knights 3-0.

Both Rick Coulter and Jeff Lewis played a half in goal, holding the Knights scoreless. Dan Nielsen scored first, and in the second half the team came together and dominated its opponent by keeping the ball in the offensive end of the field. Trevor Olson scored first in the second half, and Alex Hara sealed the victory with the final goal.

The defense was bolstered by Manch Garhart, Pete Olson, Will Zandstra and Colin Parsons.


CHS pulls out win over Totems

Katlyn Schnaible smacked a double to drive in Stacy Lousberg in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Cedarcrest Red Wolves pulled off the upset of the day and defeated the Sammamish Totems 1-0 in girls’ softball.

Danielle Brittain pitched the shutout for the Red Wolves and held the Totems to one hit. Schnaible was 3-for-4 and Brittain was 2-for-3.


Girls’ track team loses close meet

Despite several outstanding performances from the Wildcat girls’ track team, the Sammamish Totems squeaked past Mount Si at a dual meet, winning 75-74.

Piper Sherbon, who won the high jump at 5 feet and the shot put with a toss of 31 feet, 10 inches, led the ‘Cats. She also finished first in the triple jump. Kristen Berndt won the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles with times of 18.3 seconds and 53 seconds.

Kelly Fletcher won the 400 meters in 1:06.1 to complete the Wildcats’ individual efforts.

The 4×200-meter and 4×400-meter relays of Sherbon, Whitney Chelgren, Jessica Hanna, Kelly Fletcher and Berndt, captured first place. Karin Brevick finished second in the 300-meter hurdles and the 200 meters and also took third in the 100-meter hurdles. Shannon Kelly placed second in the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs.

‘C’ soccer wins again for Mount Si

The Mount Si boys’ “C” soccer team continued its winning ways last week, defeating Eastlake 2-0. The keys to the victory continued to be the strong defense and the play of goalies Rick Coulter and Jeff Lewis.

The first score came at the 28-minute mark after a penalty kick by Dan Nielson was deflected and Steve Grace alertly charged the goal to put it in. The second goal, at the 63-minute mark, came off a deflected shot by Nielson, with Aaron Duncan sending it home.

Passing and counterattacks kept the Wolves under constant pressure, thwarting their offensive opportunities.


Wildcat JV tennis notches win

In its first match of the season, the Mount Si girls’ junior-varsity tennis team recorded a 6-5 win against Lake Washington.

Singles winners were Erin Hart, 8-1, Jessie Lentgis, 8-5, Lindsay Loeffler, 8-2, and Tennyson Salopek, 8-6.

Doubles winners were Laurissa Everett and Marian Lloyd, 8-3, and the team of Karie Downing and Rebecca Coffey, 8-5.


Individuals shine for track team

The Wildcat boys’ track team started the season strong last week against the Sammamish Totems but couldn’t pull out a team win, losing 85-53.

Veteran hurdler Nick Verbon won both hurdle races and newcomer Adam Rothgeb placed second in the 110-meter high hurdles. Senior Kai Miyamoto scored points in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Verbon, Rothgeb and Miyamoto then teamed up with Michael Keller to win the 4×100-meter relay.

In the distance events, Jarrod Wiegardt won the 3,200 meters and Brian Warren placed third in the event. Clayton Moe scored a second-place finish in the 800 meters.

Steven Johnson placed second in the 400 meters and third in the long jump. Brian Lewis dominated the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 8 inches. Senior Jacob Limestall won the pole vault with a jump of 11 feet.

In the throwing events, Josh Flores won the javelin with a toss of 131 feet, 11 inches. Ryan McKinstry was third and also placed third in the shot put.

Besides his performance in the running events, Verbon also took second in the discus.


Golfers drop match to Bellevue

The Mount Si girls’ varsity golf team lost a soggy match to Bellevue last week at Bellevue Golf Course 289-260.

Leading the efforts for the ‘Cats was Jess Sanford, shooting a 50. Assisting in the effort were Stacy Shultz, Nicole Velotta, Jessica Whims and Kristina Whims.


Red Wolves defeat Interlake in track

The Cedarcrest girls’ track team took on Interlake last week and notched a 77.5-62.5 win.

Jamie Brooks took first in the 100 meters with a time of 13.1 seconds. Jenine Drew took first in the 400 meters with a time of 1:11.5. Kelly Ramirez took first in the 800 meters with a time of 2:32.3. Morgan Jackson took first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.5. Kim Drew took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.1.

Lauren Trocano took first in the discus with a throw of 93 feet, 21/2 inches. Maile Marshall placed first in the high jump at 5 feet, first in the long jump at 14 feet, 61/2 inches, and first in the triple jmp at 29 feet, 101/2 inches.


CHS boys fall

to Interlake

Despite several key performances from individual track team members, Cedarcrest fell short in its meet against Interlake, losing 83-52.

Bill English won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.7 seconds and the 200 meters in a time of 24.1. Cory Sly won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.2. Aaron O’Neal won the javelin with a toss of 169 feet, 4 inches.
