A look at Mount Si sports for the week.

Gymnasts place at invitational

Several Mount Si gymnasts traveled recently to compete in the Issaquah Invitational Gymnastics meet. On vault, Jill Buck placed 12th and Brittany Cragin won the event with an 8.20. On bars, Sarah Lewis placed eighth and Alisha Fischer placed third. On beam, Lewis placed 11th, Fischer placed 10th and Cragin placed third. Finally, on floor, Erika Jensen placed 10th.


Mount Si falls to Newport

In their final home meet of the season, the Mount Si gymnastics team hosted Newport, falling in team score, 165.70 to 147.15. Brittany Cragin led all scorers with a fourth-place finish in all-around. Erika Jensen placed sixth in all-around, followed by Sarah Lewis at seventh. Jill Buck took ninth in all-around and Alisha Fischer took 10th to round out the top 10.

On the floor, Cragin took fourth, Lewis took sixth, Jensen took eighth, Buck took ninth and Fischer finished 10th. McKinna Little scored a tie for 11th place, followed by Julie Carroll who took 14th. Jessi Zavar took 15th, followed by Tiffany Kinsman with 16th and Pauline Monet who finished 18th.

On the beam, Jensen tied for fifth with teammate Buck, followed by Cragin, who took eighth, Fischer who took ninth, Kinsman, who took 10th, Lewis ,who took 11th and Tiera Welsh, who took 12th. Other placers were Kayla Jones who took 14th, Anika Granillo, who took 15th and Natalie Reynolds, who took 18th.

On the bars, Cragin took fourth to lead Mount Si, followed by Jensen, who took seventh, Lewis, who tied for ninth, Buck, who took 12th, tied with teammate Fischer who also took 12th. Other placers were Little who took 14th, Carroll who took 16th, tied with teammate Stephanie King, Ayana Hara who took 18th and Cassie Irwin who took 19th.

On the vault, Cragin once again led the Wildcats, finishing fifth. Lewis finished sixth, Fischer tied for seventh, Buck tied for ninth, Little took 11th, and Jensen took 12th. Other placers were Carroll who took 14th, Welsh who took 15th and Zavar who took 16th.

‘Cats down Islanders

The Mount Si wrestling team continued its Kingco dominance by defeating Mercer Island last week 50-21. The match started at 215 pounds where the Wildcats’ Dex Moteului pinned the Islanders’ Chris Pothoven midway through the second round. In the 275-pound class, the Wildcats’ Jeff Chapman pinned the Islanders’ Tanner Linton near the end of the match.

At 103 pounds, the Islanders’ Alex Faith pinned Mount Si’s Ryan Makala at the 1:17 mark of the first round. Teammmate Kyle Heath avenged the loss at 112 pounds, pinning the Islanders’ Chris Frickyang at the one-minute mark. The Wildcats forfeited at 119 pounds but Joe Taklo continued the streak at 125 pounds, pinning the Islanders’ Nick Vedder at the 1:29 mark.

At 130 pounds, the Islanders’ Jackson Fischer won a decision over Jacob Lund 7-6. Dallas Liebe regained the upper hand for Mount Si with a 5-2 decision over the Islanders’ Austin Fraizer. At 140 pounds, the Islanders Aaron Agnew pinned the Wildcats Dan Wright at the 1:47 mark. At 145 pounds, the Wildcats’ Jordan Sypher pinned Mercer Islands’ Jason Roth at the 1:48 mark.

At 152 pounds, Kenny Morrison won by major decision over the Islanders’ Graham Horadal 14-0. At 160 pounds, the Wildcats’ Mac Donnell pinned the Islanders’ Andreas Placks at the three-minute mark. At 171 pounds, Derreck Hannaman won by decision over the Islanders’ Tim Wettack 7-2. Finally, at 189 pounds, Seth Merritt won by a 15-3 decision over the Islanders’ Ben Porter.


JV downs Liberty

The Mount Si basketball team traveled to Liberty last week where the Wildcats notched another victory over the Patriots 50-45. Blake Hepner led the scoring effort with 14 points followed by Sam Hunston who had 10, Curtis Beach with six, Jake Handy with four, Jacob Tweten with four, Ben Emerson with three, Baker Borgen with three, Brian Dec with two, Frank McLaughlin with two and David Wink with two. Hepner and Dec led the rebounding effort with six, each followed by Tweten with four.
