Wildcats fall to Islanders

The Mount Si varsity tennis team lost to a strong Mercer Island team last week 2-7. Winning their singles matches were Janelle Campbell and Kelsey Wise.


JV team defeats Mercer Island

The Mount Si girls’ JV tennis team won 9-6 over Mercer Island last week. Winning their singles matches were Sarah Swamey, Mariana Zanella, Britney Whims and Vivian Yang. Doubles match winners were Lauren King/Rachel Ulrich, Tamara Hoerth/Amanda Nelson and Tana Thompson/Kendra Kinghorn. The girls are now 8-2-1 in league.


JV represents Mount Si

Brittany Whims and Linnea Olson, as well as Vivian Yang and Kendra Kinghorn, represented Mount Si last week at the JV Kingco tennis tournament. Yang and Kinghorn lost their first match, won two then lost their fourth. They continue in action this week.


JV team ties Bellevue

With a singles match win from Dana Christenson and Sarah Swamey, the Mount Si girls’ JV tennis team tied Bellevue last week. Doubles match winners were Heather Dalke/Amy Hamerly, Ayana Hara/Rachel Brun, Tamara Hoerth/Mariana Zanella and Nicole Stanton/Terra Miller.


Cats down Newport

The Mount Si girls’ golf team took care of Newport last Monday, 233 to 240. Wildcat sophomore standout Katie Somers was the medalist of the match, firing a three over par 39. Jen Sanford fired a 46, Becky Wada shot a round of 48 and Alyssa Bliven carded a 49 to pace Mount Si. Jodie Smith and Whitney Eand both shot rounds of 51 to round out the Wildcat efforts.


Mount Si falls to Interlake

Despite a two-over-par 38 from Katie Somers, the Mount Si girls’ golf team fell to the Saints 244 to 226 last week. Jen Sanford carded a 48 to pace Mount Si. Becky Wada and Alyssa Bliven both shot rounds of 52, and Jodie Smith and Whitney Eand each had rounds of 54 to support the Wildcat cause. Interlake is considered to be one of the top teams in the conference.

Wildcats pull out win against Totems

In a sluggish game against Sammamish, the Mount Si JV softball team rallied from being behind two times by scoring nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to steal a 14-10 victory. Eight different players crossed the plate. Krystal Stewart, Jessica Paladini, and Rachel Nyberg had two hits each. April Saffell had an amazing slide-by hand tag at home plate during the seventh inning rally.


‘Cats 10-run Bellevue

The Wildcat JV softball team played a solid game last Wednesday as they hosted Bellevue. After scoring five runs in the first inning, it became a fun game with girls getting to play in different positions. Hannah Mortensen and Emily Ruhland had exceptional games at the plate as they each got three hits. Cortney Tubbs struck out seven in three innings of relief pitching.


Mount Si trounces Mercer Island

After spring break, the girls traveled to Mercer Island and found themselves a bit rusty. Solid defense and good pitching by Rachel Nyberg held the Islanders at bay. The ‘Cats, however, had a hard time getting their bats going. Finally, in the third inning, two key hits put the girls comfortably ahead 8-0. A true highlight of the game was Kayla Stewart’s bat as she hit safely four times and knocked in six runners. The girls’ record is now 5-2, and they are 4-0 in league.

Boys fall to Issaquah

The Wildcat boys’ track team battled the Issaquah Eagles last week. While they lost 83-60, many individuals performed well. Throwers Josh Davis and Keith Keller were the stars of the meet. Davis continued his amazing first track season by winning both the shot and the discus. His best throw in the discus was a stunning 147-foot toss that established him as the best discus thrower in the league. Keller also threw a league best mark in the javelin of 165 feet, his best ever by 12 feet.

Zach Sumner continued his terrific season by once again winning the pole vault and placing second in the javelin with a personal record throw of 156 feet.

Frank McLaughlin continues to show he is one of the best all-around runners in the league by winning the 200 meter, placing second in the 100 meter and anchoring the 1,600-meter relay team to a victory with teammates Thomas Goble, Joe Taklo and Sean Bothell.

For the distance crew, Owen Strom took a pair of thirds in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters and Thomas Goble won the 800 meter.

Brad Wilbert also ran well, placing third in both the 100, and 200. Other noteworthy accomplishments included DJ Johnson breaking 40 feet in the shot to win a bet with coach Gregg Meyers and take third place and Tom Perry placing third in the javelin for his first ever varsity points. Kyle Stanton-Wyman took second in the 300-meter hurdles and Dan Floyd placed second in the triple jump.


Girls do well at Invitational

Several Mount Si girls’ track athletes competed recently against more than 1,000 athletes from Washington, Oregon and Canada at the Eason Invitational track meet held in Snohomish. The 4×100 relay team of Madison Yakaboski, Nicole Remish, Jessica Oliver and Katie Woolsey placed sixth with a time of 51.5 seconds. The same athletes placed eighth in the 4×200 relay with a seasons best time of 1:49.3. Remish placed eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.2 and Oliver placed third in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.3 seconds.
