Tennis scores second victory

The Mount Si Wildcats' tennis team posted their second straight nonleague meet victory to open the season last week at Mount Si.

The Mount Si Wildcats’ tennis team posted their second straight nonleague meet victory to open the season last week at Mount Si.

The Wildcats won five of eight completed matches against Kingco 3A rival Liberty. The match against the Patriots was considered a nonleague meet.

“We definitely missed Erika [Strine] and Cortney [Becker] [both out because of illness], but, you know, all the other kids stepped up and did a really nice job,” said Mount Si coach Sue Gallacher in comments e-mailed to the Valley Record. Leading the way was Alina Plavsky. In No. 2 singles, Plavsky took care of Liberty’s Kallie Badyal 6-2, 6-3. Kelsey Wise, in No. 5 singles action, had a much easier time; the Wildcat easily disposed of the Patriots’ Megan McNeil 6-1, 6-1.

Mount Si’s Janelle Campbell had to work a little harder in her singles match with Liberty’s Paige Martin. After falling behind a set, Campbell rallied to take the next two sets for the match victory, 4-6, 7-6 and 6-2.

The Wildcats won both completed doubles matches; a third doubles match was called early due to darkness and will not be made up. As it was, Mount Si had the lead in that match anyway, so it was overall a good day for the Mount Si tennis players. That said, Gallacher knows her team will have to work harder against the Patriots. “Liberty’s a better team this year, we’re going to have to play well again to beat them in the regular season,” the coach said.

Another scheduled meet last week against Skyline was postponed twice due to rain, and it is not clear when it will be rescheduled. The Wildcats, weather permitting, wrap up their nonleague preseason schedule with a match Thursday at home at 3:30 p.m. against Interlake. With a baseball game going on at the same time, it’ll be a good chance for fans to also see the tennis players in action.
