Warriors earn national berth

Western Baptist defeated Southern Oregon 76-68 to take its conference tournament title. Drew Langstraat (junior, Lynden, Wash.) recorded his 16th double-double of the season with 23 points and 12 rebounds as Western Baptist overcame a sluggish first half to claim its third Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament championship.

Winners of eight straight, the Warriors (28-6) will now advance to the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mont., March 6-12. It is Western Baptist’s first berth to the 32-team NAIA tourney since back-to-back appearances in 1997 and 1998. The victory assures that the 13th-ranked Warriors will post its best win-loss record in history.

Western Baptist shot 60 percent from the field and outscored the Raiders (15-16) by 15 points in the second period. Ryan Roberts (junior, Albany, Ore.) had 17 points and Mick Jacobsen (senior, North Bend) came off the bench to deliver 15. Point guard Marty Reid (junior, Salem, Ore.) issued eight assists.

Practices are held on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Mount Si High School gymnasium from 6-8 p.m. Practices will continue on a weekly basis through the end of the freestyle wrestling season (June 19). Registrations are accepted during practice sessions at a cost of $50 per person. Wrestlers are expected to have appropriate shoes and headgear.
