Several headed to district meet

MERCER ISLAND - The Mount Si girls' track team placed fourth at the Kingco meet last week held at Mercer Island High School.

MERCER ISLAND – The Mount Si girls’ track team placed fourth at the Kingco meet last week held at Mercer Island High School. The team scored 90 points, behind Skyline with 142, Issaquah with 119 and Bellevue with 97. The top six competitors from each event will travel to the district meet to be held at West Seattle High School this week.

Kristen Berndt threw the javelin 132 feet, 4 inches to claim the Kingco championship in that event. She also placed second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.9, and third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.2 seconds.

Piper Sherbon qualified in four events. She placed second in the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, 7 inches and third in the triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 4 3/4 inches. Sherbon also took third in the shot with a throw of 36 feet, 8 1/2 inches, and fourth in the discus with a throw of 115 feet, 3 inches.

Teammate Caitlin Braun placed second in the discus with a throw of 125 feet, 3 inches, and fourth in the shot with a distance of 36 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Shannon Posey also will travel to the district meet after placing third in the javelin with a throw of 115 feet, 6 inches, and sixth in the discus with a throw of 100 feet, 8 inches.

Meaghan Dunklee qualified for the district meet with a height of 8 feet in the pole vault to qualify sixth.

The 4×100 relay team of Berndt, Monica Nelson, Jordan Tipton and Nicole Remish tied the Mount Si school record of 52 seconds to qualify fifth and earn a trip to the district meet.

Remish also placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 1:00.8, and seventh in the 200.

Devan Paulus placed seventh in the pole vault, falling short of qualifying. She then teamed up with Vanessa Scalzo, Arianne Barr and Collette Hatch to run a season’s best time of 4:32 in the 4×400 relay to place eighth.

The Mount Si boys’ track team will be sending several competitors to the district meet this week to be held at West Seattle High School. Overall the Wildcats placed seventh in team points with 51. Skyline won the event with 155.

Adam Rothgeb and Alex Grazda lead the list as Kingco champions in their respective events. Rothgeb won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 40.44 seconds, defeating second-place Jake Sikma of Bellevue by one hundredth of a second.

Teammate Alex Grazda won the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 3 inches and took third in the javelin with a throw of 164 feet, 9 inches.

The 4×100 relay team of Brady Barry, Rothgeb, Toby Jones and Justice Manson took sixth with a time of 45.36 seconds, and the 4×400 relay team of Steven Johnson, Stefan Marth, Rothgeb and Conrad Haustveit took sixth with a time of 3:39.16.

Michael Keller took sixth in the javelin with a throw of 161 feet, 2 inches, and teammate Erik Tierney took fourth in the discus with a distance of 129 feet, 1 inch.

Kyle Meuli and Barry both qualified for districts in the long jump. Meuli took fourth with a distance of 18 feet, 9 inches, and Barry took sixth with a distance of 17 feet, 11 3/4 inches.

Finally, Johnson placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet.
