The Seattle Sounders Select Women defeated the Puget Sound

All-Stars 5-1 to complete their first season with a record 8-0-3.

Laurie Klein scored two goals to help lead the Sounders Select to

the victory over the All-Stars Saturday afternoon at Seattle Memorial

Stadium before 400 people.

Midfielder Sanya Trandum scored the game-winning goal in the

43rd minute off a pass from Joanie Gerpheide. Gerpheide began the

scoring with a goal in the 21st minute. She received the ball when Janelle

Munnis deflected a pass off her foot about 6 yards out. Gerpheide shot from

about 2 yards out on the right side of the goal, and it went into the back

left corner of the net.

The All-Stars only goal came in the 36th minute, tying the score at

1-1. Forward Katie Miyake scored on a penalty kick into the lower

left-hand corner of the net. Miyake earned the penalty kick when she was fouled

by Christina Harsaghy in the penalty box area.

Klein began the second-half scoring with her first goal of the season

in the 48th minute with an assist from Munnis. Michelle Badilla scored in

the 63rd minute on a pass from Dana Kimble. Klein scored her second

goal of the game in the 76th minute on a breakaway. She received the ball

about 35 yards out, dribbled down the field, and shot the ball into the

upper lefthand corner of the net.

“It was a well-played game on our part. We came out tight

(Saturday). Our players have played with a lot of the women from the Puget Sound

team and were trying too hard to prove something to them,” said

coach Chance Fry. “Once we were able to loosen up, we were able to turn it

on. Laurie Klein was excellent for us today. She settled the team down.”

In 11 games, Seattle outscored its opponents 40 to 4.

The Sounders Select Women are moving forward with the team’s

plans to become members of the W-League for 2001. Seattle will form a

division with Vancouver, Portland and possibly two California teams. Seattle

expects to come in as W1 members. This was the first year for the team.

Seattle captured the 2000 provisional W-League title with a 5-0-2 record.

Other provisional W-League teams in the Northwest Division are Portland,

Spokane and Vancouver.

Mount Si graduate Lindsey Jorgensen is the goalkeeper for

the Sounders Select Women’s team. She is also attending Washington

State University, where she is the starting goalkeeper and an honors student.
