ISSAQUAH – Some good passing efforts and tough defense by Ashley Stimpson, Nikki Neilson, Chloe Christman and Lily Adam kept the Cedarcrest girls’ soccer team in its game last Thursday night against Issaquah. But the Indians proved to be too tough, defeating the Red Wolves 3-2.

Fifteen minutes into the first half, Kimmy Drew dribbled the ball 35 yards to the goal but was tripped up in between two Issaquah players. Four minutes later she got her revenge, when she scored on an assist from Adam.

“Half of the goal goes to Lily Adam,” Stimpson said. “It was a perfect pass, and she gets half the credit. It was just a lucky shot.”

The rest of the half was uneventful, as Cedarcrest held its ground. In the second half, with Cedarcrest still leading 1-0, backup goalkeeper Jessica Sode had an excellent command of the goal, once even intercepting a ball and sending it back to midfield with a swift kick before any of the Indians could get to it.

However, the Indians kept attacking, and five minutes into the half Issaquah’s Meaghan Saunders passed to Lauren Dascenzo, who weaved her way through four defenders and kicked the Indian’s first goal of the night.

Less than a minute later, the Indians’ Sarah Burdick scored on a corner kick, and in quick fashion Saunders followed suit for Issaquah’s third goal.

Cedarcrest switched goalies after that, and with two minutes left in the game Cedarcrest’s Stimpson booted it past the Issaquah goalkeeper. But time ran out for the Red Wolves to score again, and they went home with a 3-2 loss.

After the game, coach Robert Johnson applauded the girls for their effort. He said they played “super soccer” and he had no worries or complaints.

“We laid it all out; that’s our best effort right there,” he said. “I knew we’d get a goal eventually.”
