Runner’s week

A look at Cross-Country running news from the Valley.

Wildcats outpaced by Indians, Saints

Boys – Issaquah 32, Interlake 40, Mount Si 61

Fall arrived Thursday, and with it came rain, lower temperatures,

indeterminate ceilings and questionable visibility. However, cross country

is an all-weather sport, and the Mount Si Wildcats provided a misty

Valley welcome to the squads from number one-ranked Interlake and Issaquah.

In the men’s 3.0-mile race, Interlake’s Henry Luiten broke

the tape first, with a winning time of 16:19.2. The only Mount Si runner

to place in the top ten was Payton Thompson, whose 17:06.7 was good

for sixth place. However, Bryce Kaestner took the Rookie Runner of the

Week award for knocking two minutes of his previous time.

Issaquah took third, fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth places and

the meet.

Girls – Issaquah 18, Interlake 57, Mount Si 61

The Wildcat women had more of a near-run thing, ultimately losing

second place to Interlake by four points. Issaquah took the top two places,

with Whitney Stern winning the race with a time of 20:15.2. Mount Si’s

Katie Childs ran a strong course, coming in third with a time of 22:01.

Teammate Ashley Wiegardt placed eighth with a 22:41.

Last Saturday, the `Cats participated in the Bellevue Invitational

at Lake Sammamish Park. The Mount Si men finished 27th with a team

score of 398, while the women placed 16th with a score of 311.

The Wildcats’ next 3A cross country meet is on Thursday, Sept.

30, when they travel to Mercer Island to face the Islanders and Newport.

Red Wolf boys outrun Islanders, Totems

Boys – Cedarcrest 27, Mercer Island 40, Sammamish 55

The runnin’ Red Wolves’ men thoroughly dominated Thursday’s

home meet in the rain and clag. A major herd of runners representing the

Wolves, Islanders and Totems made the two- short, two-long lap, 3.03-mile

run, which featured a slog up “Bruce McDowell Memorial Mountain”

on the last two circuits.

Cedarcrest’s James Conrick came home first in convincing fashion,

with a time of 17:28.7. He was followed across the line by Sammamish’s

Andrew Kim (17:48.6) and teammates Danny Abell (18:01.5) and

Eric Pedeferri (18:07.1). The Wolves’ Chris Lee placed sixth, with a time

of 18:17.1.

Girls – Mercer Island 18, Sammamish 60, Cedarcrest 60

The Red Wolves’s women’s squad had a time of it Thursday, taking

on the much larger Totem and Islander programs. The tone of the event

was set by the miserable weather conditions: when classmate and

supporter Bryan Sharp yelled out an inspirational, “CHS spells success!”

several ladies responded with “What are we? Wet Wolves!”

Mercer Island’s Nicole Kelleher led the pack, finishing the 3-plus

mile course at 21:13.3. The first “wet

wolf” to cross the line was Kelly Ramierez, who did a 23:22.9 for ninth place.

She was followed by teammate Yingxuan Law who clocked in at

23:040.9. Sammamish was awarded second place overall through the sixth

place tie breaker.

Last Saturday, the Cedarcrest runners participated in the Bellevue

Invitational at Lake Sammamish Park, with the men placing 17th overall

with a team score of 306. Conrick took eighth place in the 3.1 mile run,

coming across the line with a time of 16:16.

Eisenhower High School placed first in the men’s competition; the

top male runner was Nick Shuetze of Hillsboro High School, Ore., with

a time of 15:48. On the women’s side, the fastest individual was

Megan Johnson of Seattle Prep, 18:05, while Marysville-Pilchuck took the

team honors.

The Red Wolves’ next 3A meet is Thursday, Sept. 30, when they

join Bellevue in an away race at Issaquah. The matchup with the strong

Indian squad should be legendary.
