Rowers finish well

Sammamish Rowing Association placed a very close fifth in the junior women's eight, and seventh in the junior men's quad against the best crews in the nation at the 2003 Youth Invitational Championships. The event took place June 7 and 8 on Harsha Lake in Ohio and featured more than 700 championship high-school athletes competing for national titles.
Included on the women's quad was Mount Si senior Annika Safstom, who said, "I have never had a finish line feel so good."
Sammamish advanced to the Youth Invitational Championship by qualifying as one of the top two crews at the Northwest Regional Championships. The women's team qualified in four out of six events in May, which was the strongest showing by any Northwest women's crew.
The rowing association is looking forward to building on this year's success and is accepting enrollment into its summer beginning rowing program for youth ages 13-17 to build next year's team. For information, contact Kirkland Barrett, head coach, at (206) 419-0900 or kirklandbarrett@hotmail.com.
