Sixteen students from the Cedarcrest Random Acts of Kindness Club spent a chilly Saturday morning in May on a “field of dreams,” playing baseball, giving high fives and hugs, and sharing the gift of kindness with children in the Miracle League Youth Baseball Program.

This is the ninth year for the CHS RAK students and their advisor, Peggy Filer to participate in the Miracle League games. The league was created for children with special needs; this program and the children involved are nothing short of a miracle. Not only for those who play, but also for those fortunate enough to witness one of these awe inspiring games.

Participation in this league gives the children a chance to put on a uniform, step up to bat, and genuinely play the game. In most cases these children would not have the opportunity to play a game of baseball or have their very own specially-built baseball field where no score is kept, everyone gets up to bat, runs the bases and makes it across home plate (sometimes even sliding) with smiles and laughter from the first inning to the last.

This dream field was years in the planning process by the Rotary Club Members of Monroe. In 2007 the program gained interest from the Snohomish County YMCA, and through their partnership and dedication the  vision of this unique field finally became a reality in 2010.

Games are played every Saturday from April through June from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

Cedarcrest student Maggie Gromberg said, “The best part of Miracle League Baseball is seeing the happiness on everyone’s face.  I’ve played for two years and it’s always a highlight of my school year.”
