Mount Si’s Josh Mitchell claimed a state wrestling crown last weekend at Mat Classic XXIII.

Mitchell and fellow Wildcat AJ Brevick competed Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Tacoma Dome. Ryley Abscher qualified as an alternate the prior weekend at regionals, but did not wrestle.

Mitchell cruised through the 285-pound bracket. The heavyweight took down Kyle Gleed of Decatur by technical fall, 17-2, in his first match-up, then beat Tyler Rangel of Hudson’s Bay by fall in 3:47. He bested Sunnyside’s Adam Peters in a 2-1 decision, then took Juanita’s Jeremiah Laufasa for the crown, 7-3.

The humble junior “is extremely proud of himself,” dad Jeff Mitchell told the Valley Record.

Competing in the 160-pound class, Mount Si’s Brevick fell to O’Dea’s Micah Englehart by fall in 5:52 in the first round, then fell to Shadle Park’s Luke Miller, 11-7.

Mount Si took 22nd place as a team with 25.5 points. Enumclaw was the top 3A team with 145.5 points.
