Hawks fall to Pine Lake, rebound against Maywood
The Pine Lake 8th-grade team overpowered their counterparts
from Chief Kanim on Monday, Dec. 13. The Wolverines took the lead early
and were pulling away when the game ended. The final score was Pine
Lake 37, Chief Kanim 14.
Landa Pastrana led the scoring for the Lady Hawks, with six points.
Erin Hart and Rachel Perrel notched three points each while Christie Leatiota
put away two. Crystal Hunter, Martina Lynch, Amanda Lyons, Kate
Rempfer and Britannie Anderberg also saw action in the game.
Pastrana led the team in assists with two, Lynch had four steals
and Laitota led in rebounds and blocked shots with five and four
respectively. Hunter led in jump balls with five. Pastrana received the offensive
player of the game honors, while Hart and Lynch were named defensive
players of the game. Lyons was selected best off the bench.
Last Wednesday night the team rebounded, taking on the much
taller team from Maywood. In a tough fought 35-30 Chief Kanim
victory, Rose Sypher, Lyons and Rempfer saved the day after Hunter
and Leatiota ran into early foul trouble. The home team led 14-4 after
one quarter, went into the half tied 17-17, and finally pulled away over the
second half, outscoring the Maywood squad 18-13.
The Hawks’ scorers were Hart, 14; Lynch, nine; Hunter, six;
Pastrana, four; and Rempfer, two. Pastrana led the team with five assists while
Hart recorded six steals. Leatiota led in rebounds with six and had two
blocked shots, while Hunter took seven jump balls.
Hart, Pastrana and Lynch were selected offensive player of the
game, with Hunter and Pastrana taking the defensive accolades. Rempfer
and Lyons were selected best off the bench.
“This was a good win for us,” said coach Dick Kirby afterwards.
“We pressed well, we ran our offense, our press breaker and our plays. We
put the ball in the air a lot and continue to improve.”
Tolt girls defeat Snoqualmie
The Tolt Thunderbirds won in convincing fashion against
the hardworking Eagles from the Upper Valley on Thursday, Dec. 16. The
T-Birds had lost to undefeated Beaver Lake the night before and were
hungry for a victory.
Snoqualmie hustled their way to a late first quarter lead of 15-6.
After calling a time out, the Tolt Girls apparently decided they wanted
this game in a big way. They confidently turned the momentum with some
solid defense and balanced, patient offensive execution. Tolt
ultimately outscored the Eagles 43-19 through the remainder of the game,
bringing home an impressive 49-34 victory.
The offensive output was especially impressive, as Tolt scored all
of its points without the benefit of a single free throw. The 23 field
goals tied the school record, while the 49 points narrowly missed a tie for
the school record of 50, set by the Sarah Gustat/Lindsey Peterson team
of 1996-1997.
Eight players scored four or more points, while Kaitlin Worden,
Marcie McCoy and Jenny Hamilton each drained three-pointers. Katy
Dern showed her talent and hard work ethic by leading the team with 10 points
and nine rebounds. Jenny Hamilton recorded nine points, Jayme Busser
and Sofia Foster six, while Worden and McCoy both scored five points.
Jenna Jennings, Alit Hull, Missy Adams and Jessica Sode all added to the
victory with some timely defense, rebounding, steals and great ball handling.
White Hawks dominate Red Hawks
The Chief Kanim 8th-grade program has two junior varsity teams
and on Thursday, Dec. 16, the two squared off. The White Hawks took an
early 4-0 lead and then pulled away, eventually winning 18-10.
Scoring for the Red Hawks were Rose Sypher, eight, and
Morgan Durman, two. Others playing for the red team were Amanda
Dance, Salenna Welsh, Lauren Paulus, Austin Cockman and Ashley Henry.
Scoring for the White Hawks were Brittanie Anderberg, six;
Jenna Maloney and Aubrey Lequia, four; and Emily Kim, two. Jenny
Baldoz, Lindsey Joslin and Nikki Rossiter-French also got court time.
“Both teams played well yesterday,” said coach Christina
Williams. “We haven’t had a lot of time to
practice together because of illnesses and homework, but we continue to
improve. Some girls will be working toward varsity positions after the
holiday break.”
Wrestling
Chief Kanim dominates
Beaver Lake, Tolt
Several forfeitures colored the wrestling meet between Chief
Kanim and Beaver Lake middle schools, held Wednesday, Dec. 8, but the

In last week’s match Chief Kanim took on Tolt in what turned out to
be the closest meet of the season. The Hawks were down 37 to 38 with
one match left when Tyler Stranjord stepped up and pinned
opponent James Murray, sealing the 43-38 victory for Chief Kanim.
Stranjord won the heavyweight division with a remarkable
25-second pin. Other outstanding efforts were turned in by Mittleberg,
85-pound, win by 10-2 decision; Barquist, 110, pin at 1:10; Robinson, 125, win
by disqualification; Dorr, 130, pin; and Nelson, 137, win by 5-3 decision.

With the holidays looming, the school record stands at 3-1.
The Hawks next host Pine Lake on Jan. 6 at 3:30 p.m., and invite everyone
to come out and support their wrestling team.
