Chief Kanim tracksters visit new Mount Si track

The Chief Kanim track team had a recent meet on the new Mount Si track and several athletes turned in some amazing performances. The new facility provided that extra spark to help the sixth- and seventh-grade boys defeat Snoqualmie Middle School.

The sixth-grade boys were lead by Aaron Peterson, who took first place the 1,600 meter, 100-meter dash, 800 meter and the long jump. He also set one new school record in the 1,600 meter with a time of 5:47. Overall, the sixth-grade boys took first in all events except the 200-meter dash.

Following the lead of the boys, the sixth-grade girls also set a new school record in the medley relay with a time of 2:16. Relay members were Tasha Oney, Elisabeth Escobar, Hayden Coxen, Anna Okerlund and Ramie Kraun.

Chief Kanim is fortunate to have a few outstanding athletes who scored first-place finishes in more than one event. Eighth-grader Aaron Moetului is on his way to breaking records in the shot put and discus. Evan Ellington exceled in the sprints as well as both the high and long jump. Twins Helen and Hannah Hasbun competed against teammate Brielle Buhner in the 100-meter dash, all within two-tenths of a second of each other. Buhner also has a great chance of breaking the school record in the shot put. Carrie Miller and Austin Rillos led the seventh-grade teams, Miller in hurdles and the high jump and Rillos in the sprints and the long jump.

Other notable performances with first-places finishes were Cody Furulie in the hurdles and 400 meter dash. Tony Selvage took first in the discus, Ross Tassara took first in the shot put and Charlie Corriveau took first in the high jump. The medley relay team of Corriveau, Eric Woitchek, Zach Allen and Jack Polito also took first. The 800-meter relay team of Russell Ballard, Ryan Bristle, Evan Jaeger and Jack Polito also finished first.

For the sixth-grade girls, Ramie Kraun took first in the 1,600 meter with a time of 6:40. Teammate Tasha Hartwing took first in the 400 meter with a time of 1:17, Kendra Lee took first in the 800 meter with a time of 3:19.2, Aarian Ensley took first in the discus with a distance of 51 feet, 6 inches and Sally Miller took first in the long jump with a distance of 11 feet, 1 inch.

The seventh-grade boys had several notable perforamnces. Austin Rillos took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.8 seconds and also took first in the 200 meter with a time of 29.4 seconds. Stephan Hannan took first in the 800 meter with a time of 3:16.8, Kevin Lein took first in the discus with a distance of 85 feet, 4 inches and Dan Scott took first in the shot with a distance of 30 feet, 9.25 inches.

For the seventh-grade girls, Carrie Miller took first in the hurdles with a time of 14.7 seconds and also took first in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 4 inches. Teammate Anna Moetului took first in the triple jump with a distance of 25 feet, 1.25 inches and Madison Bardsley took first in the long jump with a distance of 11 feet, 10.5 inches.

For the eighth-grade boys, Vince Vasquez won the 400 meter with a time of 1:05.4, Evan Ellington won the 200 meter with a time of 27.10 and he also won the lon gjump with a distance of 14 feet, 7.5 inches. Moetului also won the discus with a throw of 126 feet and the shot with a distance of 40 feet, 1 inch. The relay team of Collin Okerlund, Chris Hindmarch, Ellington and Andrew Sypher won the 800 meter relay in a time of 1:52.4.

Finally, for the eighth-grade girls, Helen Hasburn won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.4 seconds, Buhner won the shot with a throw of 30 feet, 11 inches, Marley Robbins won the 200 meter with a time of 29.4 seconds and Taylor Carlson won the discus with a throw of 64 feet, 9 inches.

Eagles defeat Chief Kanim

The Snoqualmie Middle School track teams hosted Chief Kanim recently at Mount Si High School. The eighth-grade Eagles were triumphant over the Chief Kanim Hawks 61-46. Leading the way for the Eagles were Alex Rudd and Summer Nash. Rudd captured firsts in both the 1,600-meter and 800-meter events. In the 1,600 meter, she broke the school record previously held by Jessi Raisio from 1996 and ran to a new record of 5:47.4. Nash took firsts in the long and high jumps as well as the hurdles. Geena Bumgardner captured the other individual first-place finish in the 400 meter for the Eagles. All three lady Eagles relay teams finished first in each relay race. Taking second-place finishes for the Eagles were Megan Past in the 400 meter, Natalie Opsvig in the 200 meter, Marika Loudenback in the shot and Shelagh Macaulay in the high jump. Third-place finishes came from Lauren Snead in the hurdles, Emily Beekman in the discus, Kyla Lindberg in the long jump, Past in the 1,600 meter and Macaulay in the 200 meter.

Seventh-grade falls to Hawks

The Snoqualmie Middle School seventh-grade girls’ track team lost a close meet to the Chief Kanim Hawks recently, 47-50.

Dannah Parsons and Rachel Finnegan led the team in first place finishes. Parson won both the 1,600-meter and 800-meter runs while Finnegan captured firsts in the 100-meter and 200-meter events. Nicoll Hunt won the 400 meter and Tori Howell the discus, while both the medley and 800-relay teams captured first-place finishes. The 800-meter relay team of Breanne Beckes, Hailey Conway, Nicoll Hunt and Rachel Finnegan broke the old-school record set in 1998 in which Finnegan’s sister Lizzie was one of the record holders. They set a new school record in the 800-meter relay of 2.00.0. Beckes went on to capture a second in the high jump while teammate Howell placed second in the shot. Taking third-place finishes for the team were Maggie Burrows in the 100 meter and Renisha Johnson in the shot.

Sixth-grade wins meet

The sixth-grade Eagles won the meet in a very close contest with a final meet score of 52.33-51.66. First-place finishes for the Eagles were Delaney Nohavec in both the 100 meter and high jump, Kailey VanSlyke in the shot and Jayd Rasmussen in the 200 meter. Second-place finishers were Megan McCulley in the discus, Tyler Ceglowski in the shot put, Angela Hontas in the 800 meter and Nohavec in the 200 meter. Taking thirds for the girls’ team were Danielle Warnke in the hurdles, Katie Jensen in the 1,600 meter, Lexi Swanson in the high jump, Rasmussen in the 100 meter, and Hontas in the long jump. The 400-meter relay team of VanSlyke, Natalie Brooks, Rasmussen and Nohavec placed first, as did the 800-meter relay team of Candace Phelps, Brittany Duncan, Taylor Duncan and Alex Welsh.

Eagles post mixed results

The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade girls’ track team triumphed over the Beaver Lake Bulldogs last week 65.5 to 44.5 while the seventh-grade team fell 49-51.

The eighth-grade team was led by distance runner Alex Rudd, who took first in both the 1,600- and 800-meter events setting another personal best for herself. Summer Nash was also a double winner for the Eagles taking first in both jumping events. Geena Bumgardner ran to a first in the 400 meter and teammate Marika Loudenback also took first in the shot put. Natalie Opsvig took two second-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter events while Emily Beekman also took two seconds in the throwing events. Nash picked up another second-place finish in the hurdles. Taking thirds for the girls were Michelle Whims in the shot and discus, Lynnette Storrud in the 800 and Shelagh Macaulay in the hurdles and high jump. The 800-meter relay team of Snead, Nash, Lindberg and Opsvig also ran to a first place finish in a notable time of 1:58.7.

The seventh-grade girls’ lost the meet but had several notable performances. Distance runner Dannah Parsons took double victories for her team in the 1,600- and 800-meter races. Sprinter Rachel Finnegan also placed first in both the 100 and 200 meter. Throwing teammate Tori Howell placed first in both the shot put and discus. Having a good day for herself, Andrea Volken placed in all four of her events; second in the 800 and shot put, and third in the hurdles and discus. N
