A look at local middle school athletics.

SMS drops two

The Snoqualmie Middle School seventh-grade girls’ basketball team got off to a rocky start last week, as they were upended by Maywood and Pine Lake 38-20 and 47-24, respectively. Despite being aggressive and tough on offense, SMS could not contain its opponents on the defensive end of the court.

Against Maywood, Amy Hansen and Amy Ferree played great on offense, contributing eight and 10 points each. Amanda Harrington was tough on rebounds, while Shannon Langston hustled on defense.

In their game against Pine Lake, SMS was pressed to keep up with their opponent’s speed – despite Ferree dishing in a game-high 17 points, Amy Hansen four, and Shannon Langston two.

Tolt beats Hawks

Triggered by an aggressive full-court press and solid half-court defense, the Tolt Middle School girls’ basketball team raced to an exciting 40-22 win over the Chief Kanim Middle School Hawks.

Tolt’s point-guard duo of Jamie Coe and Karen Lawton teamed up for 19 first-half points to help build a 25-15 halftime lead. Coe added six more points in the second half to finish with 17 points for the game. She also had nine rebounds and numerous steals and assists in what Coach Vern Hough said was one of the best point-guard performances at Tolt in quite a while.

“Jamie has been working very hard to improve her skills at the point-guard position, and it’s paying off,” he said. “Her teammates feed off her speed and intensity.”

“I saw a lot of improvement from so many of the players from the start of the game to the final buzzer, and it was so good to see all the players have a part in the victory,” he added.

Stephanie Whims hauled down 11 boards and scored three points; Whitney Oviate had two points; Elyce Anderson had four points; Emily Oakes, Oviate and Anderson each had six rebounds; Katie Powell, Emily Coomer and Sarah Scott each scored two points.

Shasta Waltz, Caitlyn Roger and Cayce Ramirez provided timely defense and good ball movement on offense.

At one point the Hawks were down by 13 points, but with an intense press they came back to within six, holding Beaver Lake to only one point in the final quarter.

SMS wins game

Kelsey Parsons, playing point guard, inspired her team to victory last week as the Snoqualmie Middle School seventh-grade girls’ basketball team defeated Tolt, 16-12. Andrea Fort, Becky Wada and Danielle Carlson also played great games, all sinking key baskets for the Eagles.

Eighth-grade girls defeat Tolt

Strong games from Jenny Daley and Erin Dunklee gave the Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade girls’ basketball team an edge in their 16-12 victory over Tolt. The team showed experience and intensity during the entire game to seal the win.

Kanim bounces back

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade girls’ basketball team bounced back from an opening season loss last week to upset a pressing and aggressive Beaver Lake Team, 43-28.

The Hawks trailed after one quarter 8-9, but led by three with the score 19-16 at the half.

In the first few seconds of the second half, Britta Safstrom turned the tide with two steals and two instant baskets to open a seven-point lead, and the Hawks never looked back.

Chief Kanim played with a tenacious press and exceptional anticipation. “The girls came to play today,” said Coach Dick Kirby. “The opponent with the ball was always under pressure from our defense. Against their press, our passing was exceptional,” he added.

Leading the effort was Chelsey Potoshnik, who set a new singles-scoring record with 25 points. She also had six assists and 18 rebounds.

“Katie Morgan’s passes were the key to our success as her assists to Chelsey added to our score,” Kirby continued.

Other scorers for the Hawks were Stephanie Hart with three, Krisi Lund with three, Katie Morgan with five, Britta Safstrom with four, Ashley White with two and Katrina Zwick with one.

“The speed and aggressiveness of Britta Safstrom and Krisi Lund is a worthy note as they key the press from the front line,” touted Kirby.

Chief Kanim does well in tourney

The Chief Kanim Middle School wrestling squad looked very impressive during its opening takedown tournament at Tolt Middle School last week. It was tough to pinpoint standout performances on the team, as all wrestlers executed precise, technical maneuvers.

Wrestlers Eric Forslin, Seth Merritt, James McKiernan, Derek Hanneman, Gavin Hamblin, Daniel Lee, JJ Sleeman and Alex Higgins overpowered their opponents. Others such as Joe Taklo, Kyle Heath, Dan Reeves, MacKenzie Donnell, Jacob Lund and Cody VanWinkle used technique to overcome their foes.

Coaches Schlotfeldt, Haskell, Vasquez and Lund were very impressed with all who performed at the tournament, and they agreed that this year’s team has great potential and are looking forward to a successful season.
