Battle of the Birds scheduled
The anual Battle of the Birds girls’ basketball game between Chief Kanim and Snoqualmie middle schools will be played on Thursday, Jan. 19, at Snoqualmie Middle School. Game time is 6 p.m. with the seventh-grade varsity game followed by the eighth-grade varsity game. The Snoqualmie Eagles’ band and choir booster organization will be selling concessions during the game. This is a great opportunity for the community to come out and enjoy an evening of basketball highlighting the middle-school girls. Admission will not be charged for this game.
Hawks down Eagles
The Chief Kanim wrestling team defeated Snoqualmie Middle School last week by a score of 78-12. Winning by way of pin were Darrell Kinsman, Royce Clark, Lee Amador, Frank Tassara, Justin Chris Hindmarch, Justin Bridges and Brad Reaves. Dan Peterson, Ben Larson, Andrew Sypher, Patrick Brown, Vince Vasquez, Drew Handy, Taylor Yotz and Aaron Moetului won by forfeits. In junior varsity action, the team only had one match against Snoqualmie Middle School with Ricky Lira. Lira gave an awesome effort, but fell short in the late rounds. Ross Tassara, Zach Frederic, Sherman Hutcherson and John Farmer led the way for the sixth-grade team. The sixth-grade and JV teams are looking strong for next year’s varsity.
Eagles roll out victories
The Snoqualmie seventh-grade girls’ varsity basketball team had an impressive run last week, racking up victories over Maywood and Beaver Lake to improve their record to 7-1. In the tight confines of the Maywood gymnasium, behind the confident leadership of Jori Braun running the offense and Haley Chase and Rachel Finnegan hitting shots off the glass, the Eagles were able to maintain their composure, building a halftime lead of 14-7. Maggie Robinson was a steady influence on the boards, and behind the dogged pressure of Aubrey Larion and Hailey Eddings, the Eagles increased their lead and were able to post a 30-15 victory.
In two other heated battles with Beaver Lake, the lady Eagles came out both times with an aggressive press, which, in the second contest, resulted in quick baskets by Braun, Eddings, Larion and Chase. Alexis Pearlstein continued to apply the backcourt pressure, creating steals that, led to offensive opportunities for her teammates. Maggie Robinson set some ferocious picks, and Finnegan and Chase took advantage, driving the hoop and kissing shots off the glass as the Eagles cruised to a 30-14 victory. Jori Braun led all scorers with 10 points; Eddings had six; Chase had six; Larion had four; and Finnegan had four.
In their first meeting against Beaver Lake, Eddings led eight different Eagles on the scoreboard with 10 points, followed by Braun with five, Chase with five, Pearlstein with four, Larion with four, Finnegan with three and Robinson with two. Ali Holyoak rounded out the scoring with a bucket as the Eagles bounced the Bulldogs, 35-22.
Hawks fall to Issaquah
The Chief Kanim Middle Scool Hawks’ seventh- and eighth-grade varsity girls’ basketball teams lost hard-fought battles last week against two tough visiting Issaquah teams. The Hawks seventh-grade team started out slow, but came on in the end to within four points losing 15-19. Baylee Sinner led the effort with five points, followed by Stevie Tiley with four, Cassicy Maddux with two, Anna Moetului with two and Carrie MIller with two.
The eighth-grade team never gave up, giving 110 percent the entire game. The game was extremely physical, and the Hawks were there to compete. Briana Busby led the scoring with three points; Marley Robbins had two; MacKenzie Will had two; Alyssa McLauclin had two; Abi Petersen had two; Lara Hartwig had two; and Jess Helm had one.
