Hawks defeat Beaver Lake
The Chief Kanim Middle School eighth-grade boys’ varsity basketball team defeated a tough Beaver Lake team last week 60-46. Tanner Riley led the effort with 31 points and six rebounds. Lucas Zupan had seven points and five assists. Drew Handy added two points and Rosco Castagno had two points.
Hawks fall to Bulldogs
The Chief Kanim Middle School seventh-grade boys varsity basketball team lost a close battle with the Beaver Lake Bulldogs 34-35 last week. The Hawks made a wonderful comeback as Matt Bankston’s 3-pointer swished through the hoop as the buzzer sounded. Ian Ilgenfritz led the effort with 13 points and seven rebounds. Cooper Helm had 11 points, Matt Bankston had five points and seven rebounds, Joe Farmer had two points and seven rebounds, Dan Scott had two points and Ryan Herman added one point and 10 rebounds.
Dramatic finish in ‘Battle of the Birds’ soccer game

Midfielder Chloe Loveridge scored in the 57th minute to break a 1-1 tie and give Snoqualmie Middle School Eagle girls’ soccer team a dramatic 2-1 win over their rival Chief Kanim Middle School’s Hawks in a well-played “Battle of the Birds'” last Wednesday night at Mount Si High School.
“It was a classic rivalry between the birds. It could have gone either way. They’re evenly matched, and tonight it went the Eagles way,” said Hawks coach Mark Tucker.
Daniela Romo scored the other goal for SMS, while Megan Travis scored the lone goal for Chief Kanim.
Assists on the Eagles’ goals were credited to Alexis Pearlstein and Shila Hodgins, while Travis’ goal for the Hawks was assisted by Madison Bardsley.
“It was a fun match,” said SMS coach Darren Brown, who also coaches the Mount Si girls’ soccer team. Both teams finished their seasons 6-4.
Eagles win ‘Battle of the Birds’
In a classic battle of two basketball teams, the Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade varsity boys’ shot their way to an 82-62 victory over their cross-town rival, Chief Kanim in the annual ‘Battle of the Birds’ held at Mount Si High School. The Eagles flew out of their perch in the early minutes led by leading scorer Zander Nelson’s eight points and the timely hoops of Jordin Kinnune and the inside plays by Taylor Campbell. Chief Kanim came storming back and, behind the strong play of Tanner Riley and Lucas Zupan, grabbed the lead 14-12. In the second quarter Nelson continued his torrid shooting, putting down another 10 points from both inside and out, but this time he had company. Justin Downer stepped up to hit two outside bombs. Dillon Shain and Brett Duncan hit a couple downtown three’s, while Campbell banged in a couple tough put-backs off the glass as the Eagles clawed their way back to a 37-31 halftime lead.
In the third, with Nelson busy running the point and pumping in another eight points, Kinnune found himself open on the perimeter and scorched the nets for 11, including a clutch three as the buzzer sounded. Zac Pearlstein was a force on the boards along with Campbell, ripping rebounds and put-backs, adding six points with Shain swishing in another four from outside. In the fourth, the Eagles continued to apply the pressure with Nick Proudfoot owning the quarter adding seven points and Code Blair tickling the twine for another four. With Trey Botten injured, the entire Eagle team came to play both on defense and offense, as all players added points on the board. Nelson led all scorers with 25, followed by Kinnune’s 18. It was a great team victory as the Eagles ended their season 8-2. Nelson won the award for “Mr. Offense”; Kinnune won “Mr. Defense”; Duncan won “Mr. Hustle; Campbell won “Mr. Control the Paint”; and Code Blair won “Most Improved.”
