Kanim loses to Pine Lake

The Chief Kanim varsity basketball team fell to Pine Lake in overtime recently, losing 58-54. At the end of the first quarter, the Hawks were down 12 to 6, and down 26 to 16 at the half.

In the second half, with a strong defensive effort by Tyler Littlejohn and Eric Forslin, Chief Kanim moved to tie Pine Lake by the end of the third.

Great play in the fourth by Greg Beckmann and Erik Alexander kept the team close the rest of the game. The Hawks had three chances to win with six seconds to go but could not put the ball in the hoop, forcing the game into overtime.

In overtime, both teams traded baskets but Pine Lake hit its free throws to secure the win. Leading the effort for Chief Kanim were Littlejohn with 24 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks. Remo Castagno had 15 points, Ryan Reilly had five points and Stu Trombly had four points, four rebounds and two steals. Cory Linberg had three points and seven rebounds, Erik Alexander had two points and six rebounds and Nick Dietsch had two points.


Hawks pound Tolt

Chief Kanim’s varsity basketball team had an impressive win against Tolt recently with a score of 79-16. Tyler Littlejohn led the effort with 18 points and five steals. Dane Fenton had eight, Ryan Reilly had 12, Eric Forslin scored 10 and Stu Trombley had eight points. Erik Alexander added eight points and five steals, and Remo Castagno scored seven with Corey Lindberg and Greg Beckmann each adding two.


Hawks defeat Beaver Lake

The varsity Chief Kanim basketball team beat Beaver Lake last week 60-52. Leading the effort for Chief Kanim was Erik Alexander with 18 points, eight rebounds, five blocks and four steals. Stu Trombly added 14 points, Nick Dietsch had 10, Ryan Reilly scored 10 and added five assists, Corey Lindberg had four, Remo Castagno had four points and Greg Beckmann, Eric Forslin and Tyler Littlejohn had two points each. Littlejohn also had nine rebounds and three steals.

SMS defeats Enumclaw

The Snoqualmie Middle School soccer team improved to 2-0-1 with a victory over Enumclaw last week 2-0.

Kristen Mills scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game, assisted by Allyson Rosman and Jessie Oliver. The duo of Collette Hatch at stopper and Jordan Tipton as sweeper provided an impenetrable wall against which the Enumclaw offense failed to score.

Sabrina Albertson made eight saves at keeper for her second consecutive shutout.


JV girls lose to Enumclaw

The Snoqualmie Middle School junior-varsity soccer team played its third game of the season against Enumclaw, but came up short, losing 5-0.

Goalie Ali Bilow played a super game, stopping many shots on goal. Molly Stout and Katie Stapleton both played excellent defense for the Eagles. Offensively, Jenny Daley and Courtney Rambo both played very well, moving the ball up the field.


SMS upends Tolt

The Snoqualmie Middle School eighth-grade junior-varsity basketball team defeated a tough Tolt team 68 – 49 recently at Snoqualmie Middle School.

The Eagles were lead by Houston Train at the post who had 22 points and controlled the boards. Glen Bliss and Ben Foster hit from the outside with 16 and 10 points respectively. Zach Sumner and Cody Lesarge played smart basketball and tough defense. Tolt kept the game close in the first half, but the Eagles flew away with the victory with much improved play in the third and fourth quarters.


Seventh-grade swats Tolt

In a rousing and physical display of determination, the Snoqualmie Middle School seventh-grade junior varsity basketball team battled Tolt down to the wire and earned a hard fought victory, 34-27. Applying tenacious defense on the opponents guards were Tom Perry and Mike Martinell. Ben Price and Tyler Aydelotte played great defense in the middle, denying the ball and grabbing rebounds. Daniel Vargas led the way on offense, cutting through defenders to lead all scorers with 10 points. Derrick Perez and Price provided key baskets, connecting for six points each while Michael Smart iced the game by converting two clutch free throws to add to his six points.


Hawks down rivals

Chief Kanim’s eighth-grade junior varsity basketball team extended its win streak to four games last week with a win over rival Snoqualmie, 61-47. The Hawks dominated the first half, pulling ahead 39-18. “We came out aggressively today with our press,” said coach Dick Kirby. “And it carried into our first half offense,” he added.

“Without the press in the third quarter and against Snoqualmie’s tough press, we went flat. But we bounded back in time to pull out the win. Our guards made some excellent passes and we rebounded well against a tall Snoqualmie team.”

Scoring for the Hawks were Jud Sanders with 18, Time Coleman with 15, Brandon Reaves with 10, Ryan Baasch with six, Daniel Lee with six, James McKiernan with four and Kirk Strandjord with two. Contributing from the bench were Ian Falconer and Eric Molnar.

Sanders and Coleman led the team with six assists each. Sanders also led in steals with six, while Reaves led in rebounds with eight. Strandjord led in blocked shots with three. Sanders and Coleman were selected best offensive players of the game. Strandjord and Reaves were selected best defensive players of the game. Lee and McKiernan were selected best off the bench.


SMS ties Thunder Mountain

The Snoqualmie Middle School Eagles’ soccer team played a great game against Thunder Mountain, eventually ending the game in a tie of 1-1. Danielle Halverson scored on one of the first possessions of the game to give the team the lead. In the second half, both teams played excellent defense to maintain the tie.

Defensively the team played solid with exceptional performances by Carrie Patterson, Julie Patterson, Carmen Dunford, Katie Stapleton and goalie Ali Bilow.


Eagles dismantle bulldogs

The Snoqulmie Middle School eighth-grade Eagle Varsity boy’s basketball team took some frustration out on the Beaver Lake Bulldogs last week winning 67-34. The Eagles were rebounding from a tough loss to rival Chief Kanim earlier in the week.

Kevin Englund led a balanced attack with 20 points and 11 rebounds with Cody Hyatt and Zach Solomon adding ten each. The Eagles came out with an aggressive press and slammed a 17-8 first quarter lead on the bulldogs. Englund scored 10 of his points in the first quarter. Levi Nelson, starting his first game, collected 10 boards against a much larger Bulldog center. Travis Dalke and Blake Kinghorn sparked a 27-point explosion in the third quarter with a suffocating defense and great offensive hustle. Kyle Clearman and Chase Korsmo combined for 12 points and 10 assists from the point guard position. Jacob Wirth devoured any hope the Beaver Lake team had with two aggressive rebounds and put-backs that the Bulldogs could not recover from. Every Eagle scored a basket in the game. It was a great team effort all the way around.


JV pounds Tolt

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade junior-varsity boys’ basketball team crushed Tolt last week 72-27.

The Hawks took a 19-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Scoring for the Hawks were Ryan Baasch with 12, Tim Coleman with 13, Daniel Lee with 10, James McKiernan with seven, Brandon Reeves with 16, Jud Sanders with 12 and Kirk Strandjord with two. Playing a big part in the win but not scoring was Ian Falconer.

Sanders led the team in assists with four and steals with five. Baasch pulled down 10 rebounds and Strandjord had two blocked shots.

Coleman and Baasch were selected offensive players of the game; McKiernan and Stranjord as defensive players of the game.

“Our play was exceptional and our defense tenacious,” said coach Dick Kirby. “More importantly during the game, several players passed up easy shots to pass to a teammate that scores less often. That is a true sign of unselfishness, sportsmanship and teamwork. I am very proud of this teams accomplishments and teamwork.

“Early in the season we had to come from behi
