Eagles fall short in opener

The Snoqualmie Eagles seventh-grade junior varsity boys’ team lost its first game of the season to Chief Kanim 24-18 despite a ferocious comeback.

The Eagles were hesitant in their offensive effort opening the game and did not get rolling until the second half. Derrick Perez and Adam Dalman kept things close in the first half, hitting from the outside for six points.

The Eagles turned things up a notch in the second half, as Ben Price swept the boards for rebounds and defensive pressure was applied by Kelson Carr and Mike Martinell. Tom Perry and Michael Smart rounded out the scoring.

SMS has great week

The Snoqualmie Middle School girls’ soccer team got off to a great start last week defeating Keithly 5-0 and tying Chief Kanim.

Against the Hawks, Tove Garhart punched in a shot from 5 yards out. The Hawks managed a goal in the second half to tie the game, setting the eventual outcome.

Against Keithly, the Eagles scored early and often, with Collette Hatch, Kirsten Mills, Allyson Rosman, Nicole Hennig and Erin Dunklee all putting the ball in the net. Keithly could not break through the tough defense played by Jordan Tipton at sweeper and Sabrina Albertson in the goal.

Hawks dump Eagles

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade junior-varsity boys’ basketball team opened its season last week against Snoqualmie Middle School, eventually pulling out a 40-37 win.

Chief Kanim jumped out to an early lead but saw it whittled away through the game. Scoring for the Hawks were Ryan Baasch with six, Tim Coleman had 16, Ian Falconer had three, James McKiernan had two, Brandon Reaves had three and Jud Sanders had 10.

Sanders led the team in assists with three and steals with eight. Baasch led in rebounds with 14 while Reaves had 12. Daniel Lee was also a big part of the Hawks’ game, playing both forward and guard.

“Coleman handled the press for us, Baasch and Reaves dominated the boards and Sanders brought in a spark off the bench,” said coach Dick Kirby. “It was a good win for the short time we have practiced and being short three players.

“Their gym is about twice as long as ours, so conditioning was a factor. We have some things to work on but the team has a good work ethic and should have a lot of success,” he added.

“We settled down in the third quarter and worked ourselves back into the game, then got serious offensively and defensively in the fourth quarter to pull out the win,” said coach Dick Kirby.

The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 record going into midwinter break.
