Middle School sports

A look at sports from the three Valley Middle Schools.

Chief Kanim outlasts Issaquah

The Chief Kanim eighth-grade varsity basketball team traveled

to Issaquah last week. Both teams were ready for a tough battle and it

certainly was!

CKMS started out hot and led at the quarter, 15-8. Issaquah came back

and cut the Hawks’ lead to three, 32-29. Chief Kanim had a 23-point

third quarter and found themselves in control, 55-42. Issaquah made a run,

but Chief Kanim outlasted them and took the 68-59 victory.

All the players made contributions. Jeremy Johnston led all scorers

with 36, while adding 16 rebounds and 8 blocked shots. Kris Bostic played

well, scoring 12 points. Hank Kennedy played a great all-around game

scoring 8 points, 5 assists, 6 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

Mike Lindor pounded the boards for 8 rebounds, while contributing 5

points. Nick Sheldon and Brad Trombley had 3 and 2 points respectively. Corey

Roe and Matty Secord each added a point.

The Hawks will face a tough Beaver Lake team on Thursday.

Coach Fowler is happy with the effort but knows there is still much work to

be done.

Chief Kanim ready to go

The Chief Kanim eight-grade JV boys basketball teams had a shoot

out in the first meeting of the season between the Red Hawks and the

White Hawks.

The Red Hawks led 10-8 after one quarter and ran it to 18-12 at the

half. Both teams warmed up in the second half, finishing the third quarter with

a 29-20 score. The Red Hawks finally pulled away in the fourth frame for

the 45-26 win.

Scoring for the White Hawks were Zack Cramer, 14 points;

Chase Robinson and Anthony Robinson, four; and Brian Gross and

Matt Marshall with two each. Marshall led the team with three assists

while Kramer recorded 13 rebounds and one blocked shot. Patrick Davis and

Tom Schultz also played.

Ian Opsal scored a game-high 16 points for the Red Hawks,

followed by Junior Gonzalez with 10; Andrew Conway, nine; Ben Kruse, 6; and

Alec Sattler and Nathan Eddy with two each. Kruse notched four assists

and Conway came in with nine rebounds and five blocked shots, while Dorr

finished with 11 steals. Others in the game were Pat Haggerty and

Curtis Dorr.

Kramer was selected best on offense for the White Hawks, Davis

and Anthony Robinson received best defensive honors and Gross was

named best off the bench. For the Red Hawks Opsal, Conway and Gonzalez

were selected best on offense, Dorr was selected best on defense and Sattler

was named best off the bench.

“We learned a lot in this game,” said coach Dick Kirby. “It was

good to see all the players in a competitive situation.

“Both teams have several things to work on. We have divided our

talents into two equal teams and will have to work hard to have both teams

competitive against other teams we play. All these kids have great attitudes

and work hard and I am excited to see what they can do.”

Eagles declaw Thunderbirds

The eighth-grade SMS Eagle varsity basketball team started off the

season with a big win over Tolt on Thursday, Feb. 10. The Eagle’s inside

domination on offense and solid defense led to a 58-26 victory.

With their teammates feeding them the ball down low,

Josiah Cormier, Alex Smart and Michael Gavronski combined for 38 points

and 30 rebounds. Nick Swanson and Evan Hillburn pushed the ball up the

floor, which caught the T-Birds off guard.

Jarrod Wiegardt, Luke Landdeck and Eric Meuli shut down Tolt’s

perimeter players and the Thunderbirds could not handle the pressure.

Jim Nyberg and Josh Harris got solid rebounding position that led to many

of the Eagles’ fast-break baskets.

The same night, the seventh grade Thunderbirds also welcomed

their opposites to the “Thunderdome” in Carnation. Little did they know

they would witness the thunder of the “power trio” from Snoqualmie.

Derek Donah, Zach Elmore and Aaron Chadwell provided more than

enough voltage to shut the lights down on the T-Birds.

Snoqualmie opened with the first bucket of the game and never

looked back, scoring a 32-18 victory.

“Doc” Elmore cut through the Tolt

defense with the precision of surgeon, leading the team with 13 points.

Despite missing most of the first half due to foul trouble, Chadwell

registered 12 boards and nine points. Meanwhile “The Director,”

Donah, orchestrated the offense by dishing seven assists and dropping in

four points. The defensive intensity of Brandon Sales and Kyle Dalman

fueled the offensive tanks of the Eagles.
